trailer brake and bearing problems

Recommended Posts

I just took my trailer into a trailer supply store to have the brake system checked out. The entire brake system has been dry for the past several years. Needless to say the service center wants to replace the master cylinder, brake lines, drums, repack all the bearings on my dual axel trailer, bleed the brakes and grease the system. All was expected but here's the kicker......

He wants to charge me $850. Cry.gif Is that a little much????? Wow I was only expecting $300-400. Any thoughts?

Sounds about right. For that much $$ you should look at swapping out with disc brake axles.

Buy the parts and do the work yourself. It is very easy work just messy and time consuming.

Plenty of people on here with the knowledge to help you out.

Or like MalibyTime said I would look int doing a disc swap for that price.

I had him do the work. I have a long trip this weekend down to Lake Mead and wanted to make sure I am as safe as possible. I don't have much time before my trip to do the work myself.

Thanks for your sympathy. I mostly just venting frustration with such a stupid problem. I want to be spending my money on boat toys not brakes.

Just be glad yours was repairable and you didn't have to replace the whole axle....or the whole trailer like I did!!!

Piece of mind is worth a lot when you have a big trip looming on the horizon. Can't tell you how many times a small project I took on lost us a weekend on the water.

A little preventive maintenance could have save you all that money.

He just bought it a couple of months ago. It is a great example of something to check, though, when looking for a boat. If/when I buy another used boat I'll be sure to at least pop off the reservoir cap and check for fluid.

Edit: Oops. How'd I do that?

I found the same problem with mine at the beginning of the season. Replaced master cylinder, both wheel cylinders, all bearings, brake shoes and had drums turned. Kept the same lines but flushed thoroughly. Brakes now work great.

That is a great point. When buying a boat make sure the trailer brakes are working. If they don't work ask for a $900 concession. That was an expensive lesson to learn.
