Dripless Shaft Packing

Recommended Posts

Do any of you know anything about dripless shaft packing i.e. how it works vs. standard wax stuff, where to get it, how much, how long does it last, etc??

I believe I am coming to the end of the service life of my current (original) packing and need to replace it. The main adjustment nut is almost bottomed out in order to get the requisite 1/2 drips per 10 seconds.

Also, any advice on how to replace the packing would be greatly appreciated.

Peter, great to have you at the crew! That dripless packing seal would be a great addition to my new boat... any chance you have the diamater information (Shaft diameter and Stern Tube Outer Diameter) for me? I have an '05 WSVLX.. Also, for the sake of everyone else on the board, does Malibu use a standard diameter and stern tube OD for all of their boats??

Thanks a ton!

I thought someone at the Minnesota boat show told me they use the dripless on the 05's. Maybe I was misinformed or maybe I misinterpreted.

Oh, and Peter, what have you heard about possible failures of the dripless systems? I understand if they do fail, you've got A LOT of water coming into the boat.

Well if that's the case... It would sure save me the time and effort! I'll have to take a look. In the meantime, perhaps Peter can confirm or deny that?

Keep in mind the shaft has to come out to install the dripless packing gland. Fairly serious install. I'd say, get the rope packing again and deal with the cup of water or so that comes through per use! I'd take the time and money and put it somewhere else in the boat.

Dripless packing is an option from Malibu for 2005. It's not a PYI seal, but another less expensive brand.

The PYI seal, like perhaps some others, uses two carbon discs that provide the lifetime seal. These two surfaces are held together with spring tension. You can pull the two surfaces apart with your hand and allow water in. It takes just a small amount of pressure to create the seal. There are those that feel that something might get wedged in between, etc, and keep it open, therefore leaking. My opinion is that is BS.

I'd install one on my boat if I had it longer than a year.

pb.

ps - thanks for welcome. I only hope that EVERYONE from MBO gets word somehow.

Maybe $75 as an option on an ordered boat. If it's available as a part I haven't seen it yet, and it'll likely be $150 then...

IMHO, GFO is the way to go on an existing boat where you just want it dripless without a lot of trouble or expense...an easy DYI project. Jesse had a good write-up on the old MBO Cry.gif and lots of discussion, but if a dumb banker like me can do it, anybody can. We're talking like $12 and no drips, nada...

The malibu one I saw had a grease fitting that filled the void with grease and helped to form a better seal between the plates.

I have some data about shaft packing and drip rates, but feel compelled to wait one more year until the release. For longitudinal accuracy, you understand. As a teaser, I'll say this: I have never adjusted the packing nuts on my boat. . .

Actually neither have I, in fact I don't know if it drips 1 drip or 10 every few seconds. I know it's not pouring in so I'm ok. :)
