Spare Tire! Wow better have one!

Recommended Posts

Coming home from Lake Don Pedro today and had a tire blow out on my tandem axle trailer about 50 miles from home. Lucklily a good nieghbor that lived off the highway let me leave my boat at his ranch until tomorrow when I can get a new one. Lesson learned - get a spare tire. Anyone have a good idea where to store it? I dont like the ones that I have seen on the front of the trailer.

That spare will look really fine on the front of the trailer if you ever need it! Seriously, I added a spare to the front of the trailer after a blow out incident. I did not like the way it looked at first, but after a while it did not bother me at all.

I've seen bolt on spare tire carriers that are perpendicular (sp) to the bed of the trailer, try Marine West or Overtons, will look later, got to start work here in a sec.

I care more about having it, than how it looks. The other item I keep in my truck is a drive on lift/jack.

Just curious, how did the trailer handle with the blowout considering you still had a tire on that side?

I can't speak for Attillo but I had 2 blowouts (not at the same time) on a tandem at speeds above 70mph and it is barely noticeable.

My spare is frame mounted (u brackets) and the wheel on it matches the wheels on the trailer.

I think it looks nice and know it will look even nicer when i need to use it.

I have considered getting a black vinyl cover for it, but haven't done that yet.

I may also get a steel cable and lock since the trailer sits in parking lots while we are out on the water.

I bought a bottle jack, 1/2" drive breaker bar and a deep well socket (13/16" I think) and keep them in a small tool bag.

I keep the bag sitting by the trailer and put in into the truck very last thing. If / when i do need them, i want to be able to get to them without totaly unloading my truck.

I think the jack was less than $20 and the breaker bar and socket about another $20. All Craftsman so they should hold up.

I got the breaker bar and socket instead of a regular x-lug wrench just since it is easier to store.

Since I don't have a trailer mount, I throw My spare in the bed of the truck and use a heavy duty cable to lock it to the bed.

My truck rarely comes out of the garage so I leave it in there all summer since it's not in the sun.

I looked around a bit for a trailer mounted tool box to keep the jack/lug wrench, maybe some flares in but haven't found anything that is quite what I am looking for. Of course it would need to be water-tight for the most part. That way I would never forget to toss that stuff in.

It's funny... when I bought my boat from Brad at BridgeCity Watersports in Portland..... we were there in the fall. Only people there & we took advantage of it. Had them doing all kinds of things to get the boat dialed in before I would clinch the deal. One of those tasks was to get a spare tire. He insisted that since I had a tandem axle trailer, I didn't need a spare. I asked him if he had a spare for his truck.... of course he did. So I wanted a spare for the boat trailer too. I realize you can chain up the axle & drive a short ways with the bad tire off the ground.... but I can also put a good tire on it & keep on truckin.

I ended up mounting it with a Harbor Freight bracket. I have the right socket, lug key, breaker bar & trailer jack in the jockey box in the truck.

I was looking for the same, something that would look nice, be watertight, and be big enough to hold the tools and jack. I never found what i wanted, so i ended up with the tool bag.

That's the dumbest thing I've heard in awhile.

Kinda like the dealers who tell their customers that they don't need transom straps either, huh.

Alpine Haus in Spokane told me that one. I about fell over.
