I am looking at a couple of '09 VLX's. one has a 350 Monsoon and the other has the 320. I took the VLX out yesterday that had the 350 Monsoon engine and test drove it. it had a nice amount of power and was fine. The only problem i have with That boat is the gel coat colors. Cry.gif ORANGE?!?!? .............Anyways, the other boat is just as nicely equiped and has a much better gel coat colors, but has the 320 engine in it. I guess what i am asking is will the 320 engine do the job, Is the difference noticable?

Thanks in advance!

Depends what you want to do with this boat? Are you gonna weight it down often for boarding and surfing? If so I would hold out for the Monsoon with the colors you like, it's a buyers market right now. Aside from the engine are all the other options the same? If so, I think the upcharge for the Monsoon was around $1500 (I could be wrong on that) and you should see a similar difference in the price of those 2 boats. So you'll need to test drive a 320 to see if you think it will fit the bill.

Sweet, you're only 90 miles from me!! Nice to meet some right side NC cats on here. Have you talked with the guys at PowerSports Center in Mooresville, NC?

I think if you put a different prop on the 320 you would not notice much of a difference. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me can tell you more.

My boat has the 320 LCR. Great engine, at least as far as I'm concerned. I would have preferred the Monsoon,

but my dealer explained to me, somewhat convincingly, that I would never be able to tell the difference without

looking under the hood (and, in fact, he orders all of his 21 LSV Sunscapes with the LCR). FWIW, I truly believe

that he was right, this after four full summers using my boat.

But . . . my boat is a Sunscape. If you're going to pony up for a VLX, and, presumably, run it with ballast tanks

full of water, you may find yourself wanting for that additional power at some point down the road. Plus, IMHO,

the VLX is almost synonymous with the Monsoon. Even with the very positive experience that I've had with the

320, I don't think that I'd ever consider purchasing a VLX with at least the Monsoon.

The cats on the Monsoon, while an "iffy" kind of thing the first year they were introduced, have, I think, now

proven to be not only non-problematic, but a real asset when it comes to surfing, cutting down on some of

those noxious exhaust fumes that you'd otherwise smell [and cutting down on the CO, which you wouldn't].

Hold out for the boat that you really want.

I traded in my 07 Vride that had a 320 and purchased an 09 VTX with a 320 with an acme 1235 prop.... Never had a power problem with either boat. Plenty of power for everything.

I run an extra 2K of weight in the boat for surfing with no problems, but I do empty the extra balast while we wakeboard or ski.

I generally use the rule of thumb when ordering boats here, Sunscapes, Rides, Responses, 320. Wakesetters- 350.

I put roughly 150 hours a year on different boats and cannot tell from the seat of my pants a diffenence between motors.

There is a nice improvement in fuel economy with the CAT equipped motors- that I do notice.

The monsoon is closer to a $2000 upgrade.

I have owned VLX's with both (06,07,and 08's). I will never spend the extra for the Monsoon again. With the 1235 prop I cannot tell the difference. When it was only a few hundred more it was not a big deal but now I cannot justify the difference. I average between 75-150 hrs a season on my boats. I have never felt underpowered whether boarding or surfing. Now I will say that the 8.1 is bad***. I can tell a tremendous difference in the larger boats. Of course that is not an option in the VLX.

While it might be a small $2K investment upfront for the monsoon it could mean the difference in selling your boat.

I have to agree w/ 06vlx. I think the monsoon will help your resale value alot just because of the public percection that you have to have the extra ponies. With a Acme 1235 or OJ 475 either engine will make you happy. BTW, I love orange boats!

I agree, I think most people who have done a little research but not enough to know there's is very little difference will be more attracted to the Monsoon, especially as a private seller. At least I hope so Whistling.gif

ok, i have to ask. What is "LCR" does it really mean Low Compression Ratio? These engines are all fuel injected right? What makes the "LCR" different from a "Monsoon" besides the HP?

Low Cost Replacement

ok, smoothwaterman replied to this question in 2007, isn't google great :)

The Monsoon has a tuned intake manifold, tuned aluminum exhaust manifolds with CATs, utilitizes two knock sensors, adjustable timing, sequential PFI, and a different calibration.

The LCR uses a crank sensor (not adjustable) for timing, and everything else is basically a Monsoon 325 from a few years ago. It would be cost prohibitive to "upgrade" the LCR to a Monsoon.

Peter

i guess that answers my main question, but what does lcr stand for?
