Which Basic Maintenance Parts to Use

Recommended Posts

Here's another rookie question.

I am getting ready to do the winterization thing for the first time and it is a bit more involved than topping off the lower unit of the old Johnson outboard but I still like doing things myself.

Since I haven't gotten ahold of an oem engine manual yet, I am hoping that someone with the same set up could help me with what would be the right parts/brands to use for the following items:

Engine Merc 350 Magnum - carb (yes carb - can't have everything!)

Oil type and capacity (I am thinking Mobile 1, 15W-40?)

Filter

Fuel Filter

Transmission - Quicksilver

Trans fluid type and capacity (Dextron III?)

Trans filter

I can pull the numbers off what is currently on the engine/trans but after reading a few threads about not mixing automotive parts with marine parts I would rather see what is right first.

I have read alot of threads on winterizing and have decided to drain all water (block, manifolds, knock sensor, water pump hoses, thermostat and trans cooler) then pour a couple of gallons of RV antifreeze in the top of the engine. I think this should cover it.

Finally, has anyone ever removed the lines from the back of the speedos in case there is water in the line that could freeze? A friend does that on his 96' ProStar as a just in case, but it looks like a job on the Response.

Thanks!

Not quite sure quicksilver (merc) makes a trans. Usually merc motors are mated with a Borg Warner Velvet Drive trans. the fluid is not ATF. so I'll try to get you the specs as soon as I dig out my manual. Most likely you will need a water separating filter too( looks like a oil filter) too. I pull the speedo lines off the pitots and call it done, never had to blow them out.

Thanks,

The original trans was replace last year with the Quicksilver (Merc) trans. I will try to get the details off the sticker tonight and maybe I can find the specs from the manufacturer.

This is a learning curve for me so any tips are appreciated. I have a check list from our ski team that they use on the MCs for general stuff like cable lube, steering adj, battery, hull maint etc. but the engines are different so I want to do it right. I see that there is another filter on the engine. One on the right rear corner that I take as being the oil filter and one just above the the water intake on the left front which must be the separating filter.

Ah hah! A little closer look showed Quicksilver Remanufacturing. I emailed Merc with the serial # for more info.

I'm pertty sure that is a re-man Velvet Drive, is the fluid a light golden color? Look to see if there is a tag like that on the starboard side of the oil pan also. If so, call the original owner and find out how many actual hrs you have on the combo, it maybe fairly new.

I was told by the dealer, who knows the original owner, that the trans was replaced about 50 hours ago and chose to go with the replacement rather then repair the original when it failed. I will go out this weekend and dig around to see if there is a tag and check the oil color. Thanks!

Thanks J, I'll send you an email with the engine and trans #s.

You should think about buying this book.

It got some good reviews.

group buy opportunity?

Oh come on now,

You're rolling in an 08 boat and need a break on a $25 book? Cry.gif

Thanks, I have one coming. I downloaded a pdf copy of the Malibu Owner's Manual figuring it would answer some questions but ran into the road block of "Refer to the engine manufacturer ...". I will have to get one of these coming from Merc as I see they are still available. It's time to build the library!
