Hamstring Injury

Yesterday was a perfect day at Lake Billy Chinook. Until I popped my hamstring.

Three boats had accumulated near the Sundance ski course dock and Rick had to divert further away than normal. I tried to extend my glide by pushing down hard on my forward right foot to coast further. I mean I was pushing with all my might because it was apparent I was gonna fall short. I felt a distinct pop when it tore.

At my ski buddy and my wife's urging I did go to immediate care and had the doc look at it. Out of 3 different classes of injury mine is probably a two. Went home and took some Aleve and iced it for several hours. I'll go see a physical therapist next week. I'm 63 and never had this kind of injury even in 20 years of being a runner.

I'm told this is a common football injury and that my chances of reinjuring it are very high. Who knows maybe I'm done waterskiing at 63.

I'd like to hear what recovery times and successes/failures and reinjury experiences are with this hamstring injury are.

I recommend that you get to the PT as soon as possible(days not week). They can ultrasound the injured area to prevent scar tissue from becoming an issue(or as big of an issue). I like to be optimistic so I suspect if you stretch and strengthen the area as your physio therapist recommends youll be back up on the ski. I really do.

Once you start physical therapy the main thing is to keep stretching on a daily basis, (not overdoing it though) something I need to do when I'm not at the gym. Wait, gym.........I forgot I haven't been there in almost two months, that's how old I'm getting, I hope I'm still skiing at your age, that is great, anyways. Exercise with caution and stretching, you should be back to almost 100% in as little as three weeks

It will take a while to heal, be patient you just can't rush it. The pain will let you know when to stop/slow down. You should be back skiing in a month. Don't quit, age is just a state of mind!

63 and skiing! Awesome!! Thumbup.gif Get to and stay in PT. By spring 2010 you should be back up skis. If something off the wall happens there’s always wakeboarding, knee boarding and in the worst-case scenario….tubing. Whistling.gif

WAY worst case.

If you really did tear the muscle there is going to be significant swelling. Your primary objective right now is to get the swelling out of the tissue. ICE ICE ICE By getting the swelling out the tissue will recover much faster. Ice 3Xday for ten minutes. Keep stretching but don't stretch after you ice because there will not be enough blood in the area.

That was the motivational speech to “make” him want to get PT and get better quick. ;)

All righty then. For a minute or so I thought you were suffereing some serious brain farts.

A lot will depend on you physiologically. I think you would be fine. However, given that it was the front leg that sustained the hamstring injury, it will be a challenge to get out of the hole on that one ski with that front leg. If you truly tore the hamstring and it rolled up like a lampshade (I did this as a teenager, after first straining it earlier in the week, and then completely tearing it in a baseball tournament 3 days later), you are in for some work. You will not be back in a month. Cautiously optimistic for next season, and being careful with it. It will take time. Be patient. If you overwork the hamstring, you will do more harm than good. Good luck!

I always wondered about that, they say achilles tendons do that as well. But wouldn't that require surgery?

Link to comment

Well, I didnt have any surgery (at least not on the hammy). It was a muscle tear. Perhaps the degree of tear dictates this. I have heard of surgery being necessary for that. In aby respect, I know it took me well over a year for it to be strong, and a couple more to fully trust it ( and I was a high hurdler in high school so it was real difficult to overcome mentally).

I did have a friend tear his hamstring tendon (different injury), which is real rare. It detached from the bone, and they had to knot it through a hole drilled in the bone. That was ugly...

I asked my wife about this, pay attention and be compliant Fingerwag.gif

Here you go babe,

He should be able to participate in sports next year and should be able to water ski again. Of course there is a chance of reinjuring it with any type of sports but he should be fine after going through physical therapy. In PT they will probably do some ultrasound (deep heat through sound waves), soft/deep tissue massage, stretching and stregthening exercises. They may even do some electrical stimulation if he is in a lot of pain. After PT he will have to continue with his stretches and strengthening exercises and the chances of reinjury are less if he is compliant. He will also have to stretch before any type of sporting event in the future. I would give it 3-6 months to heal. He may only be in PT for 4-6 weeks and then he will continue on his own. Hope this helps.

Hey Babe,

This is a guy’s story on Themalibucrew, you got any advice for him since you’re the “Mercedes Benz” of PT’s around here (that’s a joke between him and I):

That sux!!!! I tore my hamstring the day after I got my new boat home....stupid softball! I went to the orthopedic and he said that I would be out for 6 weeks with rehab twice a week for the first 4 weeks. I tore the hamstring just behind the knee, where the tendon connects to the bone. When I did it, it felt like someone slapped me behind the knee with a paddle...my leg gave out while I was running and I collapsed. Its been about 3 weeks, no rehab and I'm about 70%. I'm going to start on the resistance bands today...we'll see how that goes.

Hey NDAWG,

Thank you for your replies to my inquiry and the replies from the other BuCrew as well.

I am healing up okay and am being careful. Just spin bike easy 3 days a week and light weights twice.

If I turn it the wrong way I get a very slight twinge, nothing major.

I did not respond because I figured nobody else wanted to know.

I apologize. I certainly do not want to offend anybody in the land of Blue Devils and Tarheels.

Even though you're a Mercedes lover, we still care :) No offense taken, just wanted to poke at yuh, and I'm not going to tell you again, I'm a transplanted Yankee, I'm Michigan fan through thick and thin, just living here! We have a great.........girls softball team!! Thumbup.gif
