Cant get neutral 95 response

Recommended Posts

Asked this question last week and went through the boat looking for obvious failures. Nothing obvious, the only thing I can relate is that while the motor is running I have manually actuated the dog ear that comes off of the drive trying to find a position where it would engage neutral. Nothing happening. I checked and lubed the cables and gear in the control unit, it is like butta. Still wondering if it could be the neutral safety switch???? And DIY on R&R on this pup?

TIA

Do you have forward and reverse but the shaft still turns in neutral or are you just stuck in forward or reverse? What type boat.

Yes I still have both forward and reverse and it noticeably shifts between them, however, the prop shaft spins whenever the boat is on and propels the boat slightly when the control is in the neutral position. 1995 Response with mercruiser 350 and velvet drive.

Does it really propel it in neutral? It is normal for the prop to spin in neutral.

Open the engine hatch, start the boat in teh water, and try and grab the spinning part of the driveshaft. If you can stop it easily by hand in neutral, nothing is wrong.

That sounds like a horribly bad idea and hope you are kidding.

Many boats will do this but it is not 100% normal. The issue is with the forward clutch plate pack. Either there is not enough clearance or one or more of the steel plates are warped. Will require transmission disassembly to correct. So you have to decide if it is something you can live with.

make sure your linkage is adjusted right. when the throttle is in the forward position the lever on the trans should be fully forward and the dame for reverse.. How many hours do you have and have you ever over heated your trans?

Grabbing rotating parts with body parts can lead to less body parts. Then there is all the paperwork that is hard to fill out because the body part that used to be able to do that is nowhere to be found.
