Advanced Skiers Favorite Speed and Rope length

When you are out skiing recreationally what is your favorite speed and rope length. Do you go for the deepest cut, smoothest arching cuts edge to edge, or something else? Let me know I'm interested in trying something new.

I typically ski at 33-34 with 10 feet off. Try to stay on my edge through the wake and zip back and forth and get a couple deep cuts here and there until I wear out (2-3 minutes).

35' off @34-35. Efficient pull, smooth turns. Compare video of your skiing to that of the pro's as seen in a training tape. Watch yourself in slo-mo. Great way to improve your skiing.

28 off @ 34mph. This is the first line length where you start to get the pendulum effect and since I have only run it a dozen times in the course I like to practice it on open water.

Amar,

This would be an interesting thread to either re-start or amend to "a poll" format w/ various line lengths choices...75', 15off, 22off, 28off, 32off.....

and maybe a second question as to boat speed...28mph, 30, 32,33,34,35,36

We ski 35 off at 36 mph 2.5 miles. Most if we don't stop for a quick breather is as hard as we can go. I know where the rope would be to be clearing the balls and the time to make six balls. Oh but it does not mean Jack. Get on a course and the best open water skier will be humbled.

On my old V drive we skied 41 off at MPH. It was as near to a world class wake the difference was the dip behind the second wake. If you were on edge you would not hardly see it but it just was not a Rlxi!

I have done some 34 mph at 35 off and like it.

28-32 off @ 36. Interesting topic, seems like I enjoy 28 a little more in open water for whatever reason. I've resigned to 34 in the course same as bretski75 but still like 36 open water if it's fairly smooth.

I rarely go deeper than 28-off when free skiing. I like to practice this line length mainly because of the pendulum effect. I can hit 35-off in the course, but without buoys, I don't feel I am approximately the course enough at those shorter line lengths. But, at 28-off, I have found I can approximate what I do in the course. I switched to 34 mph this season because at my age (39yo) if I want to do tournaments I should be skiing at the tournament speed. Last year, I was dipping into 35-off at 36mph just barely. I guess it felt like the right time to make the change in speed.

I used to only get to a course when I went to Coble Ski School (not often enough), but now we have a course on our lake in Maine, so I hit it at least twice a week. Still, I do more free skiing.

Let me know how that run goes. I'll bet you have a lot of fun!
