Starter Locked Up - Fix

I thought I would share this fix for a locked up starter. In the beginning of the summer I had my starter freeze up - the first time ever the boat would not start. Turn the key click - engine would not crank. I had to get a tow back in. I read several posts on here about starter getting wet means almost a guaranteed failure. I called around and was not able to locate a "marine" starter locally and wanted to get back on the lake, that next day.

So out of desperation I did this:

I took the starter off. I took it apart. I cleaned everything with electrical cleaning spray. There were some parts holding magnets that had broken off and some rust inside. I put naval jelly on the rust which dissolved it and I cleaned everything off with a brass brush. I reassembled the starter, put it back on the boat and it has worked all summer going almost every day start/stop pulling riders without a hitch.

I will probably order a new starter the beginning of next season and keep it on board, but this has worked well so far.
