Just got back from an epic trip to lake powell. 5 days of wakeboarding on glass. Tried surfing dual.........pretty fun, this was our first try! We only had 4 people in the boat so the wake wasnt that good (not to mention the weight was evenly distributed). You guys should definitely try it though!!!

I'm the one with the hat on:

That was awesome, but you guys scare the bejesus out of me with the rope coiling and rope throwing. When I surf (rarely) I use a rope that is just barely long enough to reach the sweet spot. If I threw the rope in the boat and someone threw it back at me (for whatever reason) they would have to die.

Yeah we probably shouldnt do it. In fact, we originally made a rule to stop throwing the rope out but have strayed from it. We always tell everyone (when they are surfing) to throw that thing when you start to crash so it doesnt get wrapped around anything and no wrapping it around your hand!

That is just too much fun.

Years ago I had a ski buddy that loved to slalom ski with two of us skiing at one time.

We would choreograph it so that we were both be going across the wake in the same direction and then make our cut back at the same time. It was fun to do and looked pretty good on video camera. This was when cameras actually used film. Our friends gave him the nickname "Spanada Kid" after a cheap wine that was very popular at the time. He was an excellent snow and water skier and really pushed me to improve.

He got divorced and sold his boat and then we moved to Bend so I don't see him anymore. Boy do I miss that.

Dual anything is just good fun.

Yep my buddy Lenny and I have. Had the speed up to 12 so that both side's are clean and I have seen a few TX boys riding two on one side.

Never thought of that! We had 8 people on my buddies 21' Supra a couple days ago and it put out an awesome wake to surf......I could go back about 8-10 feet and bring it all the way back in to the boat with no rope.

PS, if you guys ever get the chance to go to Lake Powell, definitely go! Here is one of many pics from this past week.........

We dual surfed in Shasta this year behind an X2 but we were both rode on the same side. We found that the guy in front needs to be pretty small, and on a foam core board that will ride up on top of the water (like a LF Custom). If not, the 'spin' of the wave will disappear and it will just get too torn up for the guy in back to ride. We could both ride ropeless, but it was more work than fun. We ended up just alternating quick sessions on the wave, with the other guy holding the rope outside the wave. It was a blast. When you finished your session you just pull out of the wave and grab a rope. I have pics somewhere and I think someone was taking video too. I'll post a pic when I find em and see if anyone has the vid.

What happens when the guy in front falls?

You guys should definitely try doing it with two boats. Preferably a Nauti or Mastercraft. It takes some patience to get it right, but once you do it creates a nice wedge in between the boats and you can cross over from curl to curl. Gotta be on a wide part of the lake or river. Rockon.gif

Couldn't find the vid of a couple friends of mine but

gives you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Was it tough to go very long for you two?

I noticed he is surfing regular on the goofy side, does that make it more difficult?

Looks cool though...

Skyskier I'm a new Malibu owner as of 2 weeks ago and being that you seem cautious I thought I'd ask... My boys (8 and 11) want to try wakesurfing this weekend and I'm trying to understand the basics from youtube. I take it I should use a short rope, knotted with no handle? I'll be using live bodies as balast but what speed do you suggest for kids being pulled behind a 2001 Response LX? Do they start lying down then up on knees before finally standing? Any other bits of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. They've been skiing, tubing and kneeboarding for a few years but the new boat has them wanting to try other things. Thanks for any advice -Chuck

No need to use a handle-less rope. In fact, I would think a rope without a handle would wrap around a body part and cause harm much easier than a handled rope.

As far as getting up, its super easy. Do it just like a wakeboard. Have the rider sit in the water and put his/her heels up on the board. As soon as you idle forward the board will stick to their feet, then you are good to throttle up. It helps it the rider is offset a little bit (as in, not directly behind the boat) so they will already be in the trough when they stand up.

Other than rope dangers be really careful about carbon monoxide poisoning. We limit our surf sessions to about 10-15 minutes then its time to let someone else surf. Also, switch positions in the boat often. The rear seats are fairly close to the exhaust and having the throttle that high with the boat that slow is a recipe for Co2 poisining.

When I first started surfing I thought it was pretty boring but now I cant wait to get back to the lake and do it! what a blast. Ballast ballast ballast is the key. The more weight (tanks, people, extra sacs) the better.

We tried driving two boats close together a couple of weeks ago to create a large enough wake to surf but we got to thinking how legal is it driving two boats that close together. I realize that each state has different laws, but what do you think? We would like to try it again but also don't want to get in trouble.

So what is everyone's thought on that....we both have 97 Sunsetters and without a ton of ballast we can't get enough wake to surf behind one boat. But with two boats driving close together we get enough wake to be able to surf ropeless.

I cant remember the size of these board but i would say one was 6ft and the other was 8ft. I usually ride a custom 5'1'' ASC Board - i can ride this board 15 back just like the longboard.
