trans problem?

Recommended Posts

I have a 1993 Malibu E. 350 hp. I am the original owner but my kids have had it in florida for 10 years. They have not used or maintained. I want to restore it back to its original state but, having some problems. The major thing is the trans is making noises and is hard to get into reverse. The noises are hard to explain but they are there and did not do it before. The fluids look clean and all hoses look ok. I am retired and do not have a lot of money like every one in todays market. So I would like to repair it if possible. I am some what mechanically app. But would like to bring the boat back to a useable state and the boat is beautiful and I love it.

Thanks for your help.

Unhook your linkage and move controls forward and reverse to see if there is bind in the cable, then move the arm/ lever on the trans forward and back and note the travel, When the cable is re- attached, the arm/lever should be fully engaged in the forward or reverse positions repectively(assuming you have a Borg Warner velvet drive) I would check this first.

If it isnt the cable or linkage as listed above, the tranny comes off very easily and could be a short bench job for any knowledgeable tranny guy. I dont have the link off hand but there is a thread that has the complete breakdown on a velvet drive for your boat on this forum.

Let us know what you find.
