SS Prop Failure

Recommended Posts

I just had my SS prop self-destruct. I know this has been discussed in other postings. I was specifically concerned about "collateral damage" to related drive line components (bent shaft, bearings, bushings, etc) and if anyone had any advice on what to look for.

(I knew I had to replace it because of what I read here, but being the cheap bastard I am, I just put it off).

Thanks!

Measure the runout on the shaft. Use a dial indicator on a stand and measure runout at the end of the shaft. Should be within +/- .002", if so you should be in good shape. Visually inspect the strut bearings also. Check resistance of shaft to rotate by hand, another good indicator of anything bent.

It should have the same resistance all the way around as you rotate it.
