Wedge question help urgent!!!

I borrowed a 2005 25' wakesetter, it could be a sunscape with wakesetter package i'm not sure, but the guy is accusing me of burning his transmission by having the wedge in the wrong position. He says it needs to be locked in the down position for regular cruisingand if you use it for wakeboarding lock it up so its parallel to the swim platform. I talked to a mechanic who said it needs to be locked up to be cruising and down for wakeboarding. Please help me determine which position is right for cruising and which for creating that wake.

For cruising it should be up towards the platform. For wakeboarding it would be in the down position.

down for wakeboarding up for cruising... how fast were you going when you were cruising?i have left my wegde down before and have run the boat at 30 for a while and the transmission is sweet.

Honestly if neither one of you know which position the wedge should be in, he shouldn't own a Wakesetter and you shouldn't be borrowing it...IMHO

First, loan mine boat to anyone…..not happening

Second, borrowing a boat from someone…..not happening

Which position was the wedge in when you were cruising and at what speed?

How did it run for you, especially at the end of the day on the way back to the dock/ramp?

If he’s been running with the wedge in the wrong position than he may have been causing the damage over time.

Have you been in the boat since he’s made this “claim” to verify it?

If it is toast and a mechanic can give the failure cause, it might help determine if this happened all at once are has been building over time.

Any weird sounds, smells or vibrations while you had the boat? Did you have to give it excessive throttle for the speed you were running?

no weird sounds or smells, but he said he had some smells when he took it out today. He told me again today its supposed to be locked in the down position when cruising and locked up against the platform when pulling someone. When I got the boat it was in the down position and didn't cruise very well, like it hada big drag, so i locked it up towards the platform and felt fine ever since. Ihave the generic owners manual and it's saying the same thing you guys are saying, but he says this model/hull is different. So the consensus is it should be down for wakeboarding and up towards swim platform for cruising, and him telling me its supposed to be down for cruising and up for wakeboarding is wrong? lets hope the mechanic says the same thing tomorrow.

And to answer the other question, the whole time i had the boat the wedge was locked up towards the platform.....which according to him is wrong. So i never did any cruising with it down.....other then a few minutes when it didnt feel right and i locked it upwards.

Bottom line:

You = smart: for even thinking about it logically and making the correct choice

Him = dumb shlt: should be looking for a Bayliner and just give the Bu to you

Not to be accusatorial - but you asked essentially the same question back in June. A complex question also about how to use the wedge and ballast systems.

Why would you borrow the same boat you just bought but know nothing about? Seems strange.

That is just my opinion - not necessarily anyone else on this board.

I listened to him then did some research on my own and asked questions to lots of people. The post I made was about the wedge and that was how I used it and now that he's using it he's saying thats not the way to use it. So just making sure I didn't misunderstand anything from the first time around.

Wedge up, wedge down - its not going to burn the tranny out either way. The way to burn the clutches out of the tranny is by holding it just out of gear so it is slipping. If your buddy has been running with the wedge down he probably wonders why his boat porpoises so badly. It happens - we forget to lock ours up - but we always know by the goofy way the boat handles. If you slipped the clutches while you were using the boat then you could very well have burned up his tranny but it sounds like he could easily have done it himself. Good luck sorting it all out.

Tell him to come on this site and tell us stories of his Malibu ownership so we can all have a good laugh. Seriously, the guy's a complete idiot if he's trying to sell you that story.

the biggest problem with borrowing something, anything, is that if it breaks or breaks down while in your possession, you are at least partly if not wholly responsible for the repair. kind of an unwritten rule of borrowing.

AND my daddy always taught me to return borrowed things in better condition than when you borrowed it. Good luck.

Sounds to me like he's either, A. Trying to blame you by making up the wedge story so he doesn't have to fix something he broke. Or B. He's too stubborn and prideful to admit he was wrong. IMO you'd rip the transom out with te wedge down before you blew a tranny. So his only complaint is a "weird smell?" From his obvious expert knowledge on boats and engines that we've ears so far that smell could have been from himself and not even the boat and he wouldn't know the difference. Either way, for future reference I wouldn't borrow that dudes boat again for sure haha

More importantly, I wouldn't let him borrow your boat when you get one.

Plus1.gifPlus1.gifPlus1.gif His transmission was probably on the virge of destruction and when you released the tension on it and then he put the tension back on it and it fried it. He's an idiot make him get something in writing from 2 mechanics saying the wedge should be down when cruising, what a rocket scientist, I am probably the least mechanical person on this website and even I can figure out that no brainer. Wegde down creates drag, hence creates wake.
