Slalom wakes 2003 Wakesetter vs. '99-2003 Response

We currently own a '90 Sanger, closed bow, no tower. Looking for a good open bow slalom boat. Kids are 13, 12, and 10, starting to slalom. We all wakeboard recreationally. Currently looking at a 1999 Respose and 2003 Wakesetter, both direct drives. My husband is the real "boat guy", please excuse my incorrect "boat" wording.

I know the 1999 Response LX has the diamond-shaped hull. We're also considering a 2003 Wakesetter, here's the wording from the ad:

21', 450 hours, Blue and White with Black Tower, Kenwood Stereo and speakers, Shower, Heater, rear trunk, bow rider, Extreme Tandem axel Trailer, Chrome Wakeboard Rack, Perfect Pass Cruise Control, Cover, This has been a great boat for me and my family. We have had absolutely NO problems with this boat, it has always run perfectly for us. We are selling in order to get a newer Malibu. $22,900.

Here's the Response LX ad:

Excellent condition, only 258 hours. White with blue accents. Pylon, open bow, pop up cleats, factory wedge, cover. still winterized, not used this year. Xm satellite radio with sub woofer. Tandem trailer, with spare and new radial tires.

Questions:

Is the 2003 Wakesetter going to have as nice of a slalom wake as the 1999 Response LX?

Does the '03 Wakesetter have the same hull as the '99 Response LX (or 200 Response)?

The '03 Wakesetter has an EFI motor, the Response's engine is carburated. Other than preferring an EFI motor (which we do), any red flags to owning a carburated Malibu? Our '90 Sanger is carburated and runs well.

My husband likes to ski the course at about 30 - 32, can't remember how many "off" he skis.

Thanks in advance!

My Sporty is carb'd...No problems. If your husband skis I doubt he will be happy with the slalom wake behind a Wakesetter. See if he can get a set behind it. I would never consider it but others will have different opinions. It depends on how aggressively he skis and if he plans to progress in his skiing.

I concur. The Response throws about the best ski wake of any Malibu. Not so for a Wakesetter.

I checked the hull charts. It appears that, in 2003, the Wakesetter came with the SV23 Wake hull,

not the Diamond hull. While the SV23 Diamond is a great hull for slalom skiing, the SV23 Wake . . .

well . . . not so much.

The Response LX will have the best wake for skiing. But the Response LX with the stepover bow access will be a little small for your family. If you want to use a bimini top to get out of the sun only the driver and observer seat will have shade. The bow area of the Response LX may get wet on occasion with one or two of your kids up front. That could be a plus or minus.

The Direct Drive Sunsetter will have an walk through passageway to the roomy bow area and you will have good room for your family. And the wake on a DD Sunsetter is not that bad, though not as good as the Response LX for slalom. You can go to a 6 or 8 foot bimini on a sunsetter and the two roomy bow cushions will have shade as well as the driver/observer. The Sunsetter will have a ski locker in the floor which you will need with your number of skiers/boarders.
