Had carb cleaned and rebuilt now it doens't run

Recommended Posts

Boat was getting doggy on take off so I had the carb professionally cleaned and rebuilt, Pretty much brand new carb. Now the engine will not give me any power when in gear. It seems as though its getting too much gas. I took the filter off the top of the carb to see what was going on. When you shut the motor off it continues to dump gas in the back chamber and floods it so you cant get it started again for a while. Took the carb back in and the guy said it looks fine. Whats going on? Any ideas?

Sounds like the needle/seat valve is not seating. Trash or something is in the way. Try tapping on the top of the carb near where the fuel line enters while it's running. This might clear it. If not,... pull the carb and take it back to the shop that rebuilt it for you.

I tried tapping on top of the carb. I took it back to the shop, and thats where it is right now. But the last I talked to the guy at the shop he said the carb looks fine, nothing wrong. Anything else it could be?

Thats what I thought, but I took it apart and blew into it and it sealed tight. Is there some other adjustment for the timing of it? How do I do that, and why didn't the carb guy do it?

No timing adjustment for the carb. If it's leaking fuel into the secondaries,... this has everything to do with float and or needle/seat valve. Put the carb back on and start the boat up. If it's still doing this,... take the whole boat to this guy and crank it up and demonstrate for him. He cannot deny this problem if he sees it himself.

Float adjustment is a measured adjustment, not something checked by air flow. Either the guy who rebuilt it just missed something or how good is he at it. Either take it back to him, or get a set of directions and do yourself, or third, find another mechanic.

I too agree with the float adjustment. He may have adjusted the float on a level benchtop, and when the carb is installed on your engine, it's no longer level (tilted back). Also, when you adjust the jets, the starting point, if I remember correctly, is one and a quarter turns out, and then go from there... Getting these to idle smoothly and reliably is the priority; the high speed adjustmants can come after...

While you're at it throw some attitude in his face. He is being obstinate for no good reason.
