Boat towing questions....

Quick question about towing the boat. A few months ago I lost my back seat cushion because I forgot to close my windshield. Since then I have been towing with my cover on. Well, the cover has scratched up my gelcoat pretty good and I cant afford an evolution cover yet. So the question is, when towing your boat, do you just close the windshield? or do you also use that glass that slides into the walkway? In the past I just closed my windshield and all was fine. Well since I lost the seat cushion I have been very weiry of losing it again.

I remember when you lost that cushion Martin, since then I make sure I use the little glass in the walkway as well as keeping my windshield shut. I dont have the evolution cover either and wont put my other one back on because of the same reasons you wont.

If you don't tow with a cover put the windblock glass in and close the windshield through the walkway that will keep everything in place. When I first got the boat I didn't have the windblock in and saw that center cushion floating so I pulled over put the windblock in and problem solved.

I tow quite a bit since the closest lake is a little over an hour away. We have been going to a lake that's 1.5 hours away. I remember when you lost your cushion several months back. Since then, I have been using the windblock with the windshield closed. So far so good (knocking on wood). Thumbup.gif

Last week I trailered 8 hours with the cover on.

Before I left I wrapped the the edge of the boat where the cover hits with Mover's Stretch Plastic Wrap. Worked great. No damage to the gel coat.

My wife thought I was crazy but I will do it again.

I think that is just part of being a wife. They cover that extensively in girl school.

I have one of the standard types of covers from Westland that has the tie-down straps. I try to tow without the cover as much as possible but we sometimes take weeklong trips over 5 hours away and need to store stuff in the boat for the trip. It seems to always rain when we do this so I use the cover.

What I have done is to cut up a swimming "noodle" into 6 to 8 inch sections. I thread one of these onto each tie-down strap and position them up close to the buckle of the strap on the section of the strap which is closest to the gelcoat. I also use the top opening of the noodle section to tuck in the free end of the strap once I have cinched it down.

This setup really eliminates any abrasions that could be caused by the straps flapping in the breeze. I have a tower with cutouts in the cover and a cinch on each side for tightening the bottom edge/perimeter of the cover. I don't get any abrasions from that either.

FWIW, I have a Rankin cover. Fits like a glove. But, I still don't tow with it (okay, I did once, but it

chaffed the paint off of the top lateral edges of my windshield)! I close the windshield at the walk-

through, and I put a heavy vinyl bag (holds my anchors) on top of the center cushion in the rear.

I haven't been sliding in the walk-way plexiglass wind block, but that's not a bad idea either.

Oh, and on a V-drive with the three doors over the engine and storage areas, just be extra

compulsive about making sure the center engine cover is locked down. On my first little boat,

a Sea Ray, I had the engine cover float up while cruising down the highway. Once the wind caught

it, it was flipped completely over, ripping out the bases of the gas springs, ripping the hinges out

(fortunately from the door, not the glass), and tearing the vinyl. I guess, though, that I was lucky

that the whole darn thing was still there, barely hanging on, when I pulled over.

Im with MalibuCPA on the stretch wrap. I have a black boat and after the first tow the scuff marks along the side made me ill. I buy the 24" wide food wrap at Sams club, go around the entire boat 3x and not a problem and that's with 8 hr tow to Powell.

Our rear seat cushion has two straps with snaps underneath it. When we tow long distances we just make sure to snap it down so it can't blow up. We also use the wind dam and close the walk through.

I just close the windshield. I have never had a problem. Those cushions are stuffed in place. Could yours have not fit so tight?[/font] Dontknow.gif

I have the same problem with my center seat too. I was thinking about using velcro strips from the supermarket to keep the seats in place.

I have had the center cushion pop up on me once but that was only because it wasn't fully seated... i would look into getting snaps or velcro.. putting in the walkway glass will kill your gas mileage.
