Anyone is Phoenix want to help me repack the shaft seal on my sunsetter?

Recommended Posts

I'm somewhat new to boating, and need to repack the shaft seal, as it's leaking to much. My problem is that I don't have a set of wrenches that are large enough, nor am I sure what I'm doing.

Anyone in Phoenix interested in providing some guidence? I'm in N. Phoenix.

Thanks for the consideration.

Thanks for the response, I'm at about 101 and I17, so we're a long way apart. Thanks again, enjoy your vacation.

The wrench you need is called a "pump wrench". The jaw is angled and it has a very short handle. I believe the size is

1 7/8" (one and seven eights inch). I'll check my tool box and post again if not right. Get 2 of them. If it's too hard too meet up you can call me and I'll talk you through the procedure.

I know it's a '98, but you may be able to just adjust it instead of replacing it.

Back off lock nut (thin one).

Tighten large nut 1/2 - one flat at a time until drip rate is appropriate - 10 drops per minute or so when in gear.

Here's a good tutorial on the replacement process if you decide to replace it.

Are "pump wrenches" sold at The Home Depot or is this something a plumbing specialty store carries?

This is what you need (you need 2 of them). You might even be able to fit them under the tranny/vdrive unit in your boat.

I didn't know Malibu supplied these. Ya learn something every day. The pump wrench is very similar except the jaw is angled. Also no square drive,... but they only cost about $18.00 ea. Your choice.

Or buy the adjustable spanner wrench at Lowes for $10 each.

LOL, I thought it was implied that any assistance would certainly include beer and manly conversation!

Now, if it just included the beer girls...Actually, that's a bad idea, then the wife would probably leave me, and the judge would give her the house and the boat!

Might want to take the boat into the dealer, basis that outcome.
