Alternator Quit Charging

Recommended Posts

My alternator quit charging over the weekend. It did this three years ago when the boat was only a few months old. The dealer said it was a broken wire then. I took a look and the connections appear to be in good order, but without a good wiring diagram, I can not trouble shoot it beyond taking the alternator off and having it bench tested. Has anyone else had a three year old alternator quit? I will be calling the dealer on Tuesday, but I am sure it will cost me an arm and a leg for them to fix it. It just seems quite a bit premature to be dealing with this type of problem.

Ken I'm not sure of the web site but Mark just picked up a great alt for cheap a few weeks ago. Check the back of the alt for a trigger wire that some time's brake off.

Greg...thanks for the head's up. There is a plug with two small wires on the back. I am certain one is the excitation wire, just don't know for sure which one. The plug and wires look good.
