Dreaded HDS

Recommended Posts

O.K. I know everyone is probably sick of talking about this issue, but I am dealing with the HDS leak in my 98 Response LX. Very freaking frustrating. Local dealer tried to get it covered under warrany with no luck. I am now looking at around $600-700 for repairs (grinding out and reglassing). To my knowdledge there are 3 ways to make the repair. One; find leak grind out and reglass. Two; log block. Three; install brass log block. The brass block I can def do myself no problem. What is the best route?

Get rid of it and install a shaft log.........I haven't pulled my plug out of my boat in two years.

Can you provide more description on what the log is and how it is installed?

What is required to the repair? I think the brass block just mounts to the surface. Does the log require disturbing the gelcoat on the outside of the boat?

In the photo you can see I have a shaft log glassed to the floor. You are looking in the existing HDS box with the lid removed. Here is a photo with the lid placed back on.

If you are the original owner and it's not leaking due to hitting something (ie, damaged by owner, etc), then warranty will cover it.

Everyone has an opinion, but I still prefer to grind out the adhesive and re-plexus it. You can install a dripless packing at the same time.

I wouldn't waist my time fooling with that POS. You might temporally stop it but the sure fix is to just do away with it completely. I didn't do mine, I had it done at a professional repair shop. If I remember correctly, it was about $600. Worth every penny.

What does re-plexus mean? Grind out he adhesive from where? Under the top plate??

The top meets the bottom & Plexus is used to seal that point of contact. He's just saying that you have to grind all of that out & re-seal it with Plexus.

Don't mean to be dumb (just happens) but, is Plexis the name for the cover of the HDS and the adhesive used to seal that cover to the HDS housing?

Where do you get a shaft log and how do you install it? DIY?

Here is a good link:

http://www.everglass.org/shaftlog.htm

I did this last year (at a local fiberglass repair shop), and absolutely no water in the bilge since this modification.

Hope it will help you !

Did he/you reinstall the cover over the box? How?

The lid in only installed for cosmetics only. It serves no function any longer. There is no sealant on it.

It is not required to reinstall to HDS cover after this modification. It is only cosmetic.

My wife says there is less vibration and less noise since we did this modification.

Sorry for my poor english...

The component that forms the stringers, the pan under the engine, the HDS box, all that you see done in black, is adhered to the inside of the hull with an adhesive called Plexus.

All this is great info. My question is where did you get your log at Sunset_Bob. Looks to me that the one that Baddog is showing could be homemade and is pretty easy to make and install. Baddog any issues this summer? Just looking for the best and most economical fix. Thanks for all your patience!

Wasn't me.

Nicemaxou is the one that put up that pictorial. I may have to do this in the near future, that is why I am so interested.

OK, I know there's a ton of information out there on this topic and I've read most of it, but I still have a question. Dontknow.gif I noticed this weekend that I have a slight leak from the HDS but it appears to be just weeping from the seem under the lid. Mad.gif Could I just pull the lid and re-seal it with silicone? I wouldn't think that you would use the plexus material at this mating surface would you?

Since it's only a slight leak that doesn't impact my use of the boat, should I just leave well enough alone and not disturb the whole thing?

Comments appreciated.
