Engine Knock Sensor was cross threaded

Recommended Posts

Our knock sensor had been cross threaded for some time, but always threaded back into it's hole ---- not this time.

My brother is a mechanic and we had it at his shop, but none of his taps and dies were the right size to rethread the knock sensor or the hole where it goes. Does anyone know the correct size for this?

BTW a new knock sensor was purchased, and it was just going to cross thread the new one as well.

You will need a 1/4" NPT (National Pipe Thread) tap for the drain hole.

So the knock sensor drain hole and the drain hole on the other side are the same size? The knock sensor just looks bigger than the plug from the other side.

Have you ever re-tapped a drain hole or heard of someone doing it? I could not find anything like that on here.

1/4 x 18 NPT

I just had to do that the tap the block thing this spring. Mine wasn't cross threaded, but the knock sensor was pitted & rounded off. The threads were full of a fine sand/silt. Last year, I got the knock sensor in & sealed, but it just wouldn't seal this year. After taping it, the new knock sensor went right in quite a few turns & I haven't had a problem since.

Harbor Freight has a 3 tap kit where the smallest is the right size for about $13 IIRC. A 1/2" 12 pt. socket fits nicely over the back of the tap.

How have you been? I see you have yourself an SLXi now. And a fine year I might add. Clap.gif How long have you had it? We are so busy with kids baseball in the spring, that I hardly check here anymore.

Where is Harbor Freight? Can you look to see what size the tap is that worked? Did the set have a die to match the tap? We bought a new knock sensor and and the threads on it got messed up before we knew it was stripped inside the drain hole, so we want to re-cut the threads with the die.

Sorry--- I read the post so fast that I just saw you had the size listed first.

I also found Harbor Frieght. It's right around the corner. We don't head north on 42 much.

We will probably get the same set.

From Indmar--- On sunday night too --- I am impressed!!

That drain hole is 1/4 NPT (National Pipe Thread).

That is what we thought, but wanted to make sure. Now on to the work itself tomorrow.

Anyone know the part # for the knock sensor and can I get it at the local auto parts store? I need to re-tap the hole and replace the sensor which has deteriorated due to rust.

Thanks,

Steve

Don't know that it's available at auto store. Napa has a cross reference for parts. I got mine from SkiDim for about $30 shipped. Ordered it on Monday, installed on Wed.

Thanks ... looks like SKIDIM is the way to go. Found some at NAPA but they are all more expensive and have no idea which one is the right one. Not sure why I didn't think about SKIDIM to begin with.

On the west side of 42 just north of WesternRow - same shopping center as Napa/Dollar General - north of Dollar General.

We ended up buying the die and tap at Ace Hardware (Cincinnati-Dayton Rd) My brother is a mechanic, and said if we want it to last, (in case we would ever need it again) we should not get it at Harbor Freight. He put the fear into me, so I spent the extra bucks since I was alredy scared enough messing with the engine block.

not to belittle your experience at all, but try hoisting your motor up and out of your boat over your gunnell with a Bobcat... that will definitely make you pucker up a bit. Shocking.gif
