Loose swim platform bracketts

Recommended Posts

I hauled my 03 Sportster out of the water today and after removing the platform, noticed that the brackets on the transom were loose. Anyone else have this problem? Was it covered under warranty?

There're the new ones. The one on the right moves about a 1/16 of an inch. The other one moves slightly less. I can spin all 4 hex bolts with my fingers. I'd been trying to figure out why there was alwys water in my bildge. I moor my boat. I'm glad it didn't sink.

in order to get to mine, i've gotta yank the tank.

so, this winter i'll do that & replace the fuel sender at the same time.

depending on what i find when i dig-in (behind the swim platform mounts) i may need to add a backing plate & get longer bolts.

planning on replacing the existing nuts with new Nylocks so they don't loosen by themselves...

Also; be sure to use Sikaflex or the 3M equivalent to put on the bolt shoulders and backing plate when re-assembling

What is Sikaflex? Some kind of silicone sealant??

quite a few steps above silicone sealant

(much more pliable, paintable, durable...)

it is available at your marine store

What material did Malibu use for the transom? Is it plywood wrapped in fiberglass? If so, Cry.gif . There is a product that I have used made by the rotdoktor (maybe rotdoctor.com) that is pretty darn good. It's a 2 part epoxy that you can inject into wet wood that hardens it and drives most of the water out. I would take out the bolts, inject as much of that stuff as I could, then let it dry. Replace the lag bolts and seal as best as you can. Unless you want to rip out the transom and replace all the rotten wood and refiberglass, this is your best option. Here's the link to the site - good stuff: http://www.rotdoctor.com/
