Engine compartment panels won't stay on

Recommended Posts

I figured this was such a common problem that I'd find a thread on it, but my search turned up nothing. Has anyone figured out a clever way of keeping the panels that separate the engine compartment from the storage areas on a V-drive attached? The velcro / hook and loop system doesn't seem to be able to hang on if you go through any rough water, and the panel holding the weight of the table top is especially vulnerable to this. Would love to hear what you geniuses out there have come up with!

Not sure how the 2003's are set up but the 2000 VLX I used to have had one thumb screw on each panel that held them in place. They quickly stripped the threads in the divider cross member and caused the same problem you are having. The best solution back then was to drill a hole all the way through the crossmember and through bolt the panels on. Would this work in your application?

Yes, that would work, was just hoping to avoid drilling....

A super simple latch on either end of the divider panel similar to this one.

Hey, I like those latches. I'm thinking I'd have to mount them horizontally somehow, however, as otherwise they might push up in to the storage doors when closed. Hmmmm. Any other thoughts out there?

Cheap and easy fix-- at least for me--

Drill hole at top of panel, thread a long zip tie through hole and around the frame. I buy zip ties in bulk and just cut it and replace when I need to get to the engine.
