Trailer rust

Recommended Posts

Hi to the crew,

I have an '04 Extreme trailer. The back cross member has 3 little running lights above where the center prop guard is welded on. Those lights are recessed into the cross member and allow water into the metal tube frame.

Over the years, rust is apparent from the stains coming out. Those little grommets don't appear to keep the water out.

Should I drill a little drain hole in the bottom of the cross member? (I was thinking 1/8" or something small as to not weaken the frame) Right now, I'm sure water just sits pooled up in there all the time.

Is there anything I could spray inside those openings to seal up and deter future rust issues? I was thinking of undercoating or something like that in a can...

As always, thanks!

Chech to see if there is a existing drain hole that is clogged with rust, sand, mud etc. as most trialers have a small drain hole already.

One of the crossmembers on my trailer did not have a drain hole. I drilled a 1/4" hole in it so it could drain. I have seen some trailers that had tubing that swelled up pretty bad from water freezing in them.
