Ballast pump filter

Recommended Posts

My fill ballast pump on my center tank will not work. I'm not sure if the pump is bad or needs to be cleaned out. Has anyone ever taken one apart to replace or clean the filter? I see that there is one screw on top, which looks like it locks the top in place. Although, when I removed the screw the top blue ring would not come loose. Any insight from the CREW???

After you remove the screw and the little blue pc then the ring will unscrew, sometimes it can be a real pain to get the ring loose. but when you do the pump will lift right out and you can inspect or clean and reinstall.

If it is stuck, after removing cartridge from pump twist the impeller to break it free. I had one that was stuck so bad I thought I was going to break the impeller before it snapped loose. Ran OK after that. It was popping breaker in panel when locked up.

Yep, I had the same thing happen to my rear starboard fill pump. Like the others said, remove the screw and the blue triangle rubber piece, unscrew the blue ring and the pump lifts right out. In my case, I twisted the impeller to free the pump, reinstalled, and am good to go. I may just replace the pump if it does it again, just for peace of mind.

3 of mine quit working so I thought they were screwed, but I phoned my dealer and they said that sometimes some dirt can get under the impellor and stop them so I took them apart and sure as heck there was dried dirt in there, gave them a twist and they all work great now.

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but if the pump needs replacing do you remove entire pump housing and cut wires/ballast hose to replace or do you drop new pump cartridge into existing housing?

And as I have said before, always keep the old working pump as an emergency pump out of your hold area for those times when you take on water. Own a boat long enough and you will know what I mean. Also to save other stupid people. Just needs a hose long enough to reach out the boat and aligator clips on the wires to reach the battery. This is a must for people who try to be prepared.
