Response LX steering Cable length

Recommended Posts

I have a 2000 Response Lx and need to know the steering cable length I need to order. Can I also get the rack and pinion section as well I I wouldnt mind replacing the whole lot since I just put in a new tilt steering column.

Thanks guys..I think its either 15 - 17 but I would thing getting the wrong length would cause some bend issues.

Swirl.

15' & comes complete with rack. Inboard Discount Marine (skidim.com) # TELSSC13415 Whoever you decide to purchase from, enquire about a model that operates with extreme ease. I seem to recall Smoothwaterman mentioning that one is available, in a previous post. (or you could purchase from his business: Smooth Water Sports)

Just read the other post on this topic. Sounds like the SSC15415 is the super easy turning unit. BTW, we just put a 15' er in Spinxt's 2000 Response LX a couple weeks ago.

Thanks for the heads up, how did the 15 footer fit? I just talked to a parts guy at Malibu and he said a 19 footer!!! I asked him 2 times and he said Yup....19 foot.

4 extra feet would wind up as a full 360 in the length somewhere to make it fit....

anyway did the 15 foot fit perfect or would 16 work OK. there is a 154-16 on ebay I might pick up if it will work.

Thanks

Patrick.

P.S. I read alll the other posts on this and the consensus spread was 15-17...just wanted to know if someone knew exactly.

You should be able to read the number of the old one. It's printed about a foot or two from the end (I forget which end though). Dontknow.gif

Just looked at the one that came out of Spinxt's 2000 Response LX (original equipment from Malibu) SCC13415 It measures 15'-4" from end of steering rod that attaches to the tiller to the far end of the rack housing, in the closed position (rod pushed all the way in)

When you take the old one out, cut the nut that hold the cable on the threaded tube in the rear of the boat. It's an aluminum nut and is swedged so as to not come un-fastened. Cut it on two flats, not quite into tube threads and then split it. Turn the steering so the tiller is towards the engine. Remove the nut from the stud in the tiller (just the one touching the steering rod end, not the one against the tiller.) Turn steering so tiller is towards rear of boat, lift steering rod off stud. Turn steering so steering rod is in shortest position. Remove panel to left of drivers foot area (Where cable goes down from dash into stringer) Unbolt rack. Begin pulling cable out towards drivers seat. We put a rope on the steering rod before we pulled it into the stringer (for the purpose of pulling the new one in) but the rope actually got bound up when installing new. I don't really think you need the rope. You may want to remove the grille from the stringer, just forward of the engine so you can reach in and help guide the cable. The hardest part is when pull the rod portion up towards the dash (and the same point when installing the new one) When I did mine, I had to pull the heater hoses to gain the last needed room. Reverse procedure to install. We put locktite on the threaded tube the steering rod goes through rather than trying to swedge the nut.
