89' Euro F3 Tranny Slipping

Recommended Posts

We just got back from a great 4th. The boat ran great the entire weekend. However, I keep having an issue with the tranny. When we surf with alot of balast the tranny will tend to slip when pulling out of the hole. Also, when skiing the course and making a tight high speed turn it occasionally slips. Finally, same situation, a tight turn while footing caused it to slip. On the first two instanses (year apart) I checked the tranny fluid and added some. On the third instance, it didnt look that low and I did not want to overfill it.

Any ideas? I hate making a turn at 40 miles an hour and having the engine overrev when the tranny slips.

We are running an acme cnc prop.

Thanks

Cheyne

I had a similiar issue when doing a sharp turn under power. I was told that Borg Warner, who makes transmissions on Merc's, which I am guessing you have, has a service bulletin about the fluid pickup being in a bad spot. So when the fluid got pushed to the side it sucked air and slipped. I noticed it on the test drive of the boat and the previous owner split the cost. Unfortunately the tranny needs to come out and sent to a marine tranny shop.

That doesn't explain why it happens when surfing, but that is a lot more weight than that trans was designed for.

Why do you think it's the tranny versus cavitation of the prop?

I just didnt think that it would cavitate while surfing? We run the boat around alot at wide open and make hard turns with nothing happening but a suppose with a footer on the pole he could pull it over enough to cavitate. I would like to blame it on the trany. Does anyone know how much this fix costs? Is there any cheap remedy, like a little extra fluid?

When checking the fluid is the engine supposed to be off and warm? or On and warm?
