electical trouble shooting

Recommended Posts

I need some help. I have a 2001 sportster 5.7 carburated. The engine will stop at idle throwing the ignition breaker. When I go to restart it it runs for a few seconds and the alternator shows it is only charging at around 10 and it dies again. After I do this a few times it starts and runs great. This has been going on for about two weeks. I have recently replaced the fuel relay that runs off the oil pressure as I thought it was bad but I am not sure it ever was bad. The boat always starts after an episode so I am reluctant to bring it the shop while it is running. Any help would be great. Thanks Jay

Start by checking the wires on the alternator. Twice I had one of the lugs break loose. If corrosion on any wiring is an issue in your boat, check for same on wiring associated with charging circuit.
