Mastercraft ProStar 197

Yesterday was the first time out for Dennis' ProStar in our 3 boat rotation for our crew.

We had a 93 degree day and flat water at the Billy Chinook course. The campers were just starting to come in for the Independence Day weekend. Our plan is to go back Sunday with 2 boats and our families as the weekenders are driving back to Portland.

I think they have a great look, too although there was a great looking Response LX that showed up late. The bow area of the 197 is easier to reach than the Response LX when docking.

Anyway that ProStar has a great wake, very smooth controls, a good CD stereo, and is reasonably quiet.

The 197 is a pretty solid boat, Now that the Malibu's have gotten bigger this boat is more appealing to some of the hardcore skiers. Especially since some private lakes have a length restriction.

Really liked the look of the all black tournament team 197 (last year?). Won't give up my Malibu though.

2008 197 is VERY loud. No mufflers! Not sure if they fixed this for 2009+? I would like to check out/ski the Nautique 200, too!

One of the MC promo guys around here used to (not sure if he still does) replace the mufflers with PVC every year because he thought it sounded cooler when it was nice and loud. Pretty annoying if you ask me.

I skied behind a Prostar 197 last year and maybe it was the extra weight of the tower, racks, speakers,...but it's wake was rock hard and had me flying 5-6' out onto the flats. Hard to run the course when you can't change edges cause you're in the air.

I've skied behind two different 197's one w/o a tower and the other a 3 event boat. Both have a great hole shot, though the wake isn't quite as good as the Response as it doesn't have the softness/rampiness of the diamond hull. The tracking is good maybe a tad bit better due to the fact it sits deeper in the water than the Response. Definitely the driving isn't as precise as the Response and really rears it's ugly head at slow speeds. The non 3 event boat has been plagued w/ all sorts of problems and the owner is regretful he sold his '96 Response which provided over 800 hours without failure. The 3 event boat had a much more pronounced table and steepness to the wake. You really had to suck the wake in your knees compared to the non 3 event boat. I'll say this boat on a full tank was able to run 22 slalom sets with some to spare. The RLXI has a larger fuel capacity and slightly larger footprint at the same stated weight.

While the dash isn’t bad in terms of layout and readability, I do prefer the simplicity and elegance of the of the Malibu dash. The aluminum backdrop on both the cluster gauges and switches isn’t something I prefer nor the style of “flip” switches. Nothing beats the rocker switches in my boat because day or night I can visually see if they are on w/o having to jump to see. The engine cover also seems to sit much more pronounced than in the Response.

Hey Justin,

You forgot the other thing - the '08 197 is as loud as a Bu!

And Steve just needs something to complain about. His problems have been mostly Indmar's fault (plus the time the oil filter didn't get tightened).

Marcus's boat with the tower and big engine definitely has a harder wake than Steve's '07, though. No argument there.

Kyle
