"Loose" Steering

Recommended Posts

I just replaced my steering cable and now my wife thinks it is too "loose" and can "sping the wheel 3 times" before it starts to turn.

We have it out of the water now...and it seems like there is a little play in the rudder (like 1/8 of a wheel turn)

Any ideas?

Do I need to tighten the cable using adjustemnt tube near the rudder?

Thanks

Dave

Was the prop shaft key put back in during re-assembly?

I'm not sure, but is it possible that the end of the cable comes out of the gear in the steering rack/column? Thus requiring a few turns before it catches. Na, that sounds dumb.

I think 1/8 turn is about normal. I think mine turns that much before the cable starts to move. My slop is in the rack.

Now I know it's normal for my boat to need a turn from 9 oclock to 3 oclock to keep it idling straight.
