New Battery?

I have a two battery set up with a perko switch. The first battery is the original battery that came in the boat in 04'. The second battery is a stinger battery that was installed when I had the stereo done 2 summers ago. I know that its probably time to replace the first battery even though it is still starting the boat but Im not sure or educated enough to know what brand or type of battery to buy.

Would one battery be for staring only and the other just for running the stereo while the engine is off? Or would either work fine both applications?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

It depends what your needs are.

If you are not running your battery flat due to excessive stereo draw then there is an easy answer.

Determine your cheapest source. It is probably Costco.

Buy the largest capacity battery they have. It will only be a $10 premium to your battery size. That way you get big capacity at the cheapest price.

Replace your battery every 4 years or so. This is the best way to insure you never get stuck on the water.

I've been doing that for 37 years of owning boats. I've not had a dead battery in my boat yet.

I've bought a couple of Optima batteries in that time for my Porsches. The Optima did not have a longer useful life but it looks really cool.

The guy who bought my 1999 Porsche did have the Optima fail in a couple years.

Thanks for the tip. My family and I are on the water a lot and stranded is no where I want to be.
