impeller puller tool

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to pry out my old impeller on a 2001 Response. Screwdrivers, plyers, soap, engine bumping... nothing seems to work. I was going to buy a JABSCO impeller puller tool over the internet but it's iffy if I have enough clearence between the impeller and my ski pylon (about 5") to use the tool. Can't find any height dimensions on the product (which would change depending on how far in the "T" handle is screwed in by the way). Has anybody used this product or one similar? Thanks

Never used the Jabsco puller. I can tell you that my first impeller change after two years was a bear to get out. Needle nose vice grips finally did the job. I always put a little Never Sieze on the internals of the impeller and have impellers changes are a breeze since.

I have used this one on an '05 dd and a couple of vlx. if the jabsco one is like this you will not have a problem. best 30-40 bucks i have spent.

Take any two ice picks or any two pointed tools and jab each side of the impeller and pull it out. It works every time. For the install apply no-seize to the shaft and for the outer rubber use newt juice and it will slide right in. Good luck!

I bought the puller for use on my V-drive, now I only need one hand and half the time to get it out.

Before the puller it was a pain as you need both hands to use all the other techniques and thats not an easy feat on a V with the muffler in front of the pump, unless your a little person.

I bought the above impeller puller and it's about 2 inches too close to my ski pylon on my 2000 SSLXI.  Any reason I can't cut some of the shaft off the puller to make it work?

I really hope I never experience this impeller stuckness, but on one hand I kind of hope I do because I really can't relate to this at all. Every year I squirt a little wd40 on it, bump the engine for a sec, and slide my impeller out with some needle nose plyers. I can't imagine needing a puller...

Yeppers, it comes out way faster than using a puller.

If it's hard to get out with needle nose pliers your doing it wrong especially on a DD boat.

FWIW, I just grab them with a needle nose and they come right out of the Johnson style pumps with no lube.  The only ones that have been a huge pain are the ones in the belt drive pump on my inlaws Merc powered Response.

Edit - although I don't expect to use them again after removing them that way, they only get pulled to be replaced every 2 years

Particularly on a response with easy access, I pull the impeller each season using a puller, have used pliers just not quite as easy.

no problems with clearance on the 2011 RLXI

put the impeller in a plastic zip lock bag with the cap, screws & tie to the steering wheel.

that way you see it first should you decide to use the boat

funny thing is at the start of the next season the blades have straighten out against most  as good as a new one. Only 3 months offseason down under.

bit of light oil or cooking oil used to re install & have used the same impeller for 4 seasons now.
