2004 VLX died yesterday

Recommended Posts

Had something weird happen to me on the lake yesterday. Was on the water for a couple hours and cruising at about 30 MPH. All of a sudden the engine went putter putter for about 15 seconds then died. It will turn over but it won't start. Initially I was thinking fuel pump or fuel filter. I took it over to my mechanic and that is not the problem. It is definitely getting fuel. Had to leave it with him but he is thinking it isn't getting a spark. Anyone seen this before? I am hoping it is just a loose wire somewhere.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Wasn't a choppy day. Gauges still work. Going to check all connections today.

If it ends up being the Ignition Module, where is the best place to order online?

That kill switch should also be on your list to check. Its easy to wire around it (but maybe not legal in your state).

Are your gauges dead too? Was it a choppy day? Check your lanyard and its connections.

When is the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Fuel filter this year. The engine is getting fuel. I checked the kill switch and that is not the problem either. I have taken it to a mechanic to check the ignition control module.

Forgive me for my newer model ignorance, but does your boat have a safety lanyard? My 00 Sunsetter has one of those safety lanyard that you are supposed to wear around your wrist, ala jetski. I had the same thing happen to me. Putt'n along and then the engine died. It would still turn over but it would not start. Checked fuses, fuel, filter, etc. I remembered the lanyard. I wiggled the lanyard switch and then it fired right up.

Talked to the mechanic just now. He says everything points towards the ignition module. He is putting a new one in late tomorrow.
