I have a 1998 Sportster and I am having a few glitches. I have the trouble shooting guide and will begin to test the unit. However, I have one question which I could not locate. Does the MDC control the hour meter, stereo, bilge pump and Aux lights?

Has anyone ordered direct from Medallion?

Thanks,

Brian

Do you live where the boat needs to be winterized. People have been forgetting about the water in the pitot's tube that run to MDC . If they freeze the tube cracks and then leaks water on the MDC and shorts it out. A lot of this has been happening, and there is a backlog of orders for these MDC's. One local MC dealer has been able to get them. Call Chuck at Bay Area Watersports Bay Area Watersports Ask for Chuck

To answer your question. Yes, most things on your dash will run through the MDC. No luck with buying direct from Medallion because of backlog. Medallion fills its biggest customers first(usually dealers and manufacturers). Call BAWS they seem to be able to get supply from Medallion.

Thanks for the info. I pulled the gauges out last night and it appears the 1998 sportster doesn't have a MDC. None of the gauges have a connector on them. They are all hard wired with crimped connectors. Is this possible?

Quite possible, not sure, but I think the MDC didn't show up until 99 or 00. Even if it did, it controls the large gauges - Speedo, Tach/Hour, Fuel Level/Temp/Oil Press/Volts, but not the lights or stereo or bilge pump.

Take a look for a short/blown fuse/open break or grounding issue between your dash area & battery. Also look at you ignition switch connection and lanyard switch. (I wouldn't think it was the last 2 because you didn't mention the boat not running, but it there could be a loose wire or so on the ignition switch.)

Electrical gremlins are often quite difficult to track down, but since yours all seem to be related, it's likely a single power or ground issue.
