SkySki Helmet

Most of the pics I see of people on a SkySki or Air Chair are wearing a helmet. The advantages to a helmet are obvious when slamming the water at such heights. My question is geared to the type of helmet. The ideal of course would be one made for the item being used. But what about a bicycle helmet? Some protection would be better than none but would a bicycle helmet provide enough protection in a good “slam-dunk”?

The main reason for wearing a helmet is ear protection. The Pro-Tec Ace Wake is the most popular. Make sure that you get something with ear flaps.

Well, I've never seen it but I've heard that it's also for the scenario that your feet come out of the wraps. If they do, the foil could come around & try to embed itself in your skull. I've seen what can happen with a wakeboard to the back of the head, I'd hate to see what all of that billet could do.

We were at Powell trying gainers on the Skyskiabout five years ago, a buddy of mine tried a gainer, we heard a load crack and when we pulled around to him he was shaking his head. He had a helmet on and said something hit him in the head, I started looking at his helmet and it was broke right across the top in the perfect shape of the front edge of the board. If you are trying to jump or any inverts, get some Cinch foot stays and wear a helmet. I ran into a guy a couple of years ago with a nice long scar in the back of his head from the foil. They are a blast to ride, heck it is all I ride anymore, but you need to protect yourself.

I agree. If I get another one (& I might for the next boat), I'll have the trick release as well. I think it was Bill in the other thread that mentioned the helmet, Cinchers & trick release all being necessities.

Re-reading the OP's post, I don't think that a bicycle helmet would be good enough since they don't typically come far enough down the back of the head. Maybe a skate helmet or one that is marketed for "extreme sports" since those are typically more of a bucket style than a bicycle helmet. The ear flappers are good too, since as mentioned they help to prevent ear blowouts.

Wow! OK, a bicycle helmet is out of the question. Now I'm thinking steel-reinforced-full-face-wrap-around. Well, not really, but a good quality helmet is a must have.

LOL, a knight's helmet came to mind while reading that.

I'm the oddball here. I wear the helmet to remain awake. Never had a problem with my ears when crashing. But have been knocked silly a couple times. I have been using the Protec Ace Wake for about 7 years..... with no ear flaps. They make too much noise for me.

I just ordered the ShreadReady half standard in blue carbon. Unfortunately it doesn't fit. So I'll have to return it. Very nice quality though.

A bicycle helmet won't cut it because it'll be underwater. You need a helmet that is meant to get wet.

I wear a Pro-Tec classic full cut helmet that was originally sold as a white water kayaking helmet. The price was a little lower.

Make sure the helmet fits real tight, it will shift when you hit the water.

Pro-Tec Ace Wake with ear flaps. Good foot stays will do the most to keep your noggin safe, but not much else to do to prevent a ruptured ear drum when splatting from that great height.

I do agree with Bill, though...the ear flaps are kind of a nuisance. Fortunately they're removable on that helmet, for the days when you're feeling lucky.
