Is the Edelbrock Marine 1409 a direct replacement for the quadrajet

Recommended Posts

Hi All

My friend is needing to replace his Rochester Quadrajet off his 1991 Sunsetter and it looks like the Edelbrock Marine 1409 is the way to go for replacing.

Is that the case? Is it a ez replacement or are there a lot of extra parts / mods needed? Is there a better way to go?

Thanks for the help

The Edelbrock carb is much better that the quadrajet could ever be! I've replaced over 10 quadrajets with the Edelbroeck and every one was been a vast improvement. However, the Edelbroeck is a square flange carb and the quadrajet is a spread bore, so you'll need an aluminum adapter plate or change the intake manifold for it to fit. Once it's on there you'll find it has great features and will be easier to tune. The jets and needle valves are easy to access, the electric choke works great and the air/fuel screws are right in the front. It's money well spent.

Plus1.gif The cheapest way is to get the space adapter and that will actually give you a slight rise on the carb, but if you go with a new intake make it an alum. high rise for a little performance :)

Thanks for the advise on the adapter. It bolted up and we needed to change out the fuel line and it worked great. The only thing that seemed strange is that the idle mixture screws were set to one turn out. From what I remember to adjust you set them out at about 4 1/2 turns out and turn the RT one in until the idle dropped and then back it out one turn and then do the same to the LT screw. Then issue I had was that the idle never seemed to drop. I could turn them both all the way in. I set them to one turn out and it ran good. We just had a problem when starting it again after sitting for a couple on min, it would be hard to start. If it was cold it would fire right off. Any thoughts? This way my first attempt ad adjusting a boat carb, but I thought they would be the same.

I think you have a vacuum leak somewhere, starting up when it's cold indicates that your actually in a rich condition so you must have the carb jets adjusted wrong. Be careful before you do some heavy driving because you can do some damage by not having it proper adjusted. Also check the timing
