Crazy wakeboard

Actually, you learn to ride at a slower speed than wakeboard, like 12 or 14 mph, and your wearing snowboard boots. So you can't really "point your toes" like on a wakeboard. If your up on the foil at all, and you do manage to do this, all it does is send the foil into a hard turn & spin you around while forcing your knees to bend. There is no hard slap as you crash. There can be some pretty big torque put on your knees though.

Couple more pics. These are from 2002.

And the first wake roll ever landed on a stand up foil.

Hey Bill-

I was in the tow boat at the '07 Chain Reaction tournament for these guys runs... Biggrin.gif I think I have it on video somewhere too...

I would bet though that as you progress (just like on a chair) the crashes get geometrically more abusive. Biggrin.gif How are the landings on that thing? Seems like it would be quite a bit softer than a regular board.

Yea, just like anything else, the crazier your tricks get, crazier the crashes get. There are currently guys landing wake rolls, air rolls & 3s on the air board. Even a couple of surfers landing rolls too. Rush Randle that I know of. And possibly Laird.

I haven't ridden stand up more than a few times. Just didn't feel like my knees were going to put up with it long. But landings would be similar to sitting down, ie; land on the foil & feel a slight impact, then drift down till the board hits & feel a 2nd impact, both a lot less than feeling it all at once. And just like sitting down, keep the foil angle right & you won't dig in & have it sub you.

Jake has a bad back & occasionally will have to lay low for a while & let it heal. The air board hasn't made it any worse (or better either).

We taught a wakeboarder last summer how to ride in TriCities. Smitty is a good boarder, 3s, 5s, Crows, Tantrums, fronts, etc., owns & rides behind a over weighted LSV all the time. He was due to go in for knee surgery in the fall & was tender on the knee at the time. He got up on the air board within a couple of tries, and was able to ride across the wake & steer it anywhere he wanted within a couple of rides. He said he could feel the crashes on the bad knee but it wasn't too bad. After surgery he bought his own air board & has been rippin it up this year.
