2006 RLXi cutting out

Recommended Posts

Hey, I've got a 2006 Response LXi (club boat). Recently, at slalom speeds 32MPH and above while going through the course, the engine sounds like it is missing our cutting out for a split second. It is definitely different than the normal PP surging feeling/sound.

I haven't started to troubleshoot this yet. My theories so far are either something with the fuel pump, or possibly bad spark. It seems to idle ok and doesn't feel like it is lacking power while pulling up a skier.

Anything else I should be checking?

Thanks.

I had this exact problem a couple years ago. A momentary (split second) hesitation much like the key had been turned off then on.

It turned out to be a loose canon plug. Once I disconnected it and slightly bent the pins, the problem has never come back.

I'm talking about where the Indmar wiring meets the Malibu wiring. In your engine compartment, just follow the wiring leading out of the engine. They will come to a plug. It's about 3" long or so and maybe an inch or so in diameter. Usually held together with a hose clamp. It's basically what you would unplug if you were going to swap out your engine with the same one.

To help eliminate variables, I'd check cap and rotor for corrosion build up. This tends to very noticable at the 30-32 mph range.

Thanks again for the suggestions. I pulled two of the spark plugs tonight and frankly I can't believe the boat runs at all. They are in terrible shape. the electrodes are really worn and the gap must be over twice as much as spec. I'll start with some fresh plugs and go from there.

SmoothWaterMan, is the cap and rotor that big blocky looking thing in the back with all the plug wires going into it? couldn't figure out how to take that apart Tongue.gif
