Speedo problem.. need some advice

Went to the lake this weekend and my speedo started acting up. When I was idling back to skier the speedo would jump to 20 mph then drop back down to 5 then go to 15 then to 0. It did this several times. Then it started jumping around at wakeboard speed. Finally it just stopped working. Thought it might be the paddle wheel. So I got under the boat and checked it everything is fine. Started looking at the paddle wheel cable and it has a spot where it looks like it was stripped in one spot. Cable is still intact but where the spot is looks like there is some corrosion. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem. Do I cut out the bad part and splice it back together? Or Do I just order a whole new cable and hope that works?

I haven't had my speedo jump around like that but mine seems to be very tempermental. Sometimes it works but most of the time I just can't get the cruise to turn on. I haven't investigated enough to find out what the problems is.

i have had the same problem with mine (03 Wakesetter VLX). it is the depth finder that causes this problem. i ended up going under the dash and unscrewing the cable to the depth finder. solved the problem for me...i really don't need the depth finder on my lake.

I've noticed on our boat that you can't turn on cruise at speed. You have to either be idling or throttling up to speed. Once you get past 15MPH, you can't turn it on. Not sure if this is by design or an issue that needs checking.
