I attempted to pick the old packing out of the prop packing in my Vride on Saturday. I finally gave up. It wasn't coming out easily & the contortionist positions I was in sucked.

You can do it by pulling the prop shaft out of the boat. But you have to unbolt the coupler & probably use a puller to get the coupler off the end of the shaft. There is such little room in there I think you'd have to pull some other things out to make that happen, ie; bilge pumps, fresh water intake hose, maybe even the v-drive & trans.

I ended up tightening the prop packing nut down so it leaked at the right rate & call it good for now. Maybe another day I'll feel like knotting myself up under the transmission.

Although the right way to do the job is to completly remove the old packing material, you can just leave it in there and add one ring of new packing.

Removing the v-drive will be atleast a couple hours labor and may not be worth it.

Mine was super easy...took a double open end 1 7/8" wrench and cut it in half to make 2 stubby wrenches, all ready to go. Then a seperate warranty issue came up so I let the dealer repack if for me!!! Only $90 and my knuckles look good. At least I have the tools to adjust it down the road.

Do you need to replace the packing or just adjust/tighten? How many hours on your '06?

You shouldn't need to replace the packing for 300+ hours.

It will leak more the first day or so it's on the water, until the packing re-hydrates.
