Does the hour meter start when the ignition switch is turned on( listening to music) or just when the engine is actually running? thanks

Not sure about your boat, but mine starts when the key is turned.

Are you talking about a mechanical meter or the computer meter? Do you have a mech. meter?

Your '07 VLX will not spin the hour meter until a certain RPM...300, I think. Older boats will turn the hour meter with just the key on. I'm not sure when the switch took place, but I think it was in the very late 90's or so.

You should have that changed and have it hooked up to your alternator. My last boat was like that, accidentally left the key on auxiliary and racked up 96 unwanted hours :) Had it fixed the next day.
