No Start on Euro F3

Recommended Posts

I have a 90 Euro F3 I just bought with approximately 900 hours. The engine is a 5.7L, 260 Hp, with roughly 200 hours. The engine started fine when I bought the boat but lately I have noticed a no crank condition that comes/goes. Turn the key, nothing, no solenoid click, nothing (fortunately I was loading up when this happened today). Prior to today, I would turn the key several times and eventually I the engine would begin cranking and start with no problem. Engine runs perfectly after starting.

The throttle was in neutral and I moved it back and forth to make sure the neutral safety was engaged (could still be the problem).

The battery is fine once the solenoid/starter engages.

Thoughts?

When it happens next time pull out the neutral safety defeat switch to make sure that the safety switch isn't the problem. Ours had been giving us fits and I finally adjusted the tranny linkage so it will start with the throttle perfectly in neutral. Before, you had to pull it ever so slightly back to get the switch to engage. It was easy to run it back and forth and think it wasn't the problem unless you knew right where the "sweet spot" was. It was frustrating when others who weren't familiar with the boats throttle couldn't get the boat started, so I finally fixed it. Thumbup.gif

Had the same symptions on my previous 1992 Euro f3. Turned out to be the relay right by the main circuit breaker (validated with test light, jumping). Called a starter relay or assist relay. It made such a soft click, you had to have the engine cover up to hear it. It was only about $15 from skidim and a quick repair.

Still finding my way around the boat so bear with me; is the neutral safety switch back on the trans (two wires leading to it)? Assume I could jumper them and have the same effect?

Thanks for the quick feedback.

This is an old topic, but reading it helped me out so I'll add my experience.  I have a '90 Euro F3 with 5.7L Merc. I occasionally would get just a 'click' when turning the key into start (no starter turnover). I could solve that problem by wiggling the throttle a bit between reverse and neutral. However, recently I turned the key and got no sound (gauges, horn, blower, etc still worked though) and wiggling the throttle didn't fix it.  I unscrewed the terminals to the neutral safety switch, (which, contrary to my engine manual, is located on the drivers side of the transmission and can be found by following the black and yellow-black wires in that area), sanded and cleaned them, then tightened the connection back up. The starter turned right over and I haven't had the problem since (no need to wiggle throttle or anything).
