Wakesurfing Question

So here is the deal guys and gals, I've been surfing since I was just about eight years old (we don't live terribly far from the coast) so I've always kept about three different boards for surfing. When we decided to try out wakesurfing I just took my 5'11 fish made by Seven and started using it. The question is how much am I missing out on by not using an actual wakesurf board. Is it enough to validate spending another $300 to $500 on a board that is made for wakesurfing, ANY input would be great, Thanks, Jason.

I would beg or borrow one and give it a try yourself........that way you will know for sure and there will never be a doubt. My local shop will even take a board back if you don't like it (just don't damage it)

I've thought about that, we just don't have any shops like that around here, it would be about a 3 1/2 hour drive so it makes it kinda tough, usually when we have to buy something our only choice is to do it online.

If you have enough of a wake to make manuveers on that board you should be fine....I used a mini longboard on my brother in-laws wakesetter and we had a blast!!!! It is all about the wake and board working toghther,so have fun!!!

We started out using a ocean surfboard (Long Board) also, but it was truly a long board about 6 1/2 feet and still had a blast. We are currently using two different boards the longest of the two being 5 11". I see allot of traditional wakesurf boards at that length so IMO if it works, why change. Have fun learning on your existing board and when you master it spend some money on something else.

Since you have surfed the lerning curve is going to be quick. I did the same my ocean board lasted 2 weeks then I needed something else. I made the mistake of thinking a wakesurf is good enough well I was wrong, the blue Inland Surfer was nice for 1 day then I wanted more. I finely tried a Walker and wow what a difference. very responsive, stable and fast down the line, I orderd a custom Walker Bullet and I think wakesurfing is more fun than the ocean.

Thats what I'm thinking, it took about two days and I had exhausted about all the possibilities of what could be done on the ocean board I have, although it does seem to work pretty good for beginners because it is a small wave board. Never heard of Walker though, I think I'll have to check them out, Thanks

Maybe i'm not that good  , but sometimes when i accerlerate on the wakesurfer I sometimes hit the swimdeck. I would hate to do that with my surfboard. The wakesurfers are moe durable than a regular surfboard, IMO.

I've never hit the swim deck but I have had some friends that were learning that got a little too agressive and hit the back of the boat

We have 6 surfboards and 1 wakesurfer. We started with a 6'6" ocean board years ago. It was good to learn on. Got a 6' next and it was faster and more responsive. We got a 5'11" fish board - I like it because I am 240lb and it is responsive and floats - my son is 150 lb and he says it is a tank. We just got a 5'5" oceanboard and my son likes it - too small for me. We also have a 5'5" liquid force wakesurfer - the girls like it best. We also have a 5' funboard (kiteboard) - my son likes it because it is fast.

We liked the real surfboards because they feel more like real surfing than skimboarding. Also like the surf wax feel.

I tried the Ronix Koal last week and I think it is the best of both worlds. It is made like a real surfboard but shaped like a wakesurfer.

Yes the real surfboards get dinged easily but the ding repair goop is fast and easy.

Which shop is that? (ps. I've got an unreal hookup on boards right now if you're lookin)

As far as surf boards: I would definitely try a wake specific surf board. I love my CWB Tsunami. Give it a test spin if you have the means.

BS- Hillcrest exchanged my board 2 months after the original purchase. The board was in flawless condition unlike how I returned your carpet cleaner Whistling.gif Thanks for the hook up but I just bought a board 1 month ago!!!

BTW- for anyone interested I exchanged it for a bigger board and quickly outgrew it.......now I am back to a smaller board a CWB Ride. So in 1/2 season of surfing I am on board #3......don't be like me and get a board you can grow in to.

That's funny you say that my better half was born and raised in kauai she would rather wake surf than beach surf. Her brother comes over a few times a year and love it also. Me i have nothing to compare it to living in nor cal my whole life.

Thanks for all the help guys, and I do have to say, as few and far between as it is that we get good surf in this part of the country, and endless wave is pretty fun.
