Removing Piranha ballast pumps

Recommended Posts

Anybody got any tips on removing these pumps. I have an 04 Wakesetter VLX and the bow fill pump is toast. Trying to remove but in such a tight location (under the floor in front of the gas tank) and can't get any tools in there and shes had 5 yrs to weld itself in there.

Thanks

I'm replacing my left ballast pump on my '06 247 LSV that's located in a very tight spot in the rear, right next to the V-drive. There is almost no room to spin anything back there either. But, if you can remove the single screw on the top of the of the Piranha blue retaining ring, you can then unscrew the ring and at least change out the pump body, leaving the lower housing in place (IF it's not cracked or damaged). That way, you do not have to unscrew the entire Piranha pump assembly. Hope you have enough room up in front.....

After removing that screw for the blue retaining ring, that little 'plastic nut' that the screw threads into holds that ring in place. Does that blue ring lift straight up or does it need to thread out? Right now I'd like to remove the entire assembly and install those tsunami 800 pumps.

Once the screw is out, the blue ring threads off of the lower housing, freeing the top pump body. The pipe threaded lower housing remains in place on it's 3/4 pipe thread.

Don't think a Tsunami 800 pump will work....it doesn't have the required 3/4 NPT threaded fitting....unless they have some type of adaptor to replace the screened pump inlet (the Tsunami seems to be a "sump pump" only).

Those look better. But, you'll have to add a female hose-bib fitting to your fill line hose end so it will connect up to that male hose-bib outlet connection on the Tsunami 800 pump.

Easy to do though....just make sure you get a "high flow" female connection with at least a 5/8" ID (3/4" ID is even better). Stainless connectors would be best, but probably all you'll find is brass....

I have a burned out pump as well. I see how to remove and replace, but I'm wondering about the electrical connection. Without seeing the pump off (I'm not at the lake anymore), is there an easy way to reconnect power without re-running the line to the dash or do I have to splice the new pump onto the existing power line to the dash?

I was told that you can use butt-connectors and shrink tubing to seal it up.

Cool..that's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure if there was an easier way. Thanks for the reply.

I have changed 1 in my 06. It had been connected about 16 to 18 inches from the pump to the wire harness. Trace the old wire for about a foot or two and I think you will find where it is spliced in.

Thanks Dalt, I'll do that. Absent finding where it's spliced in, I have some heat shrink butt splices ready to go. We've had fun saying that the last couple of days too...so that's a bonus!

Finally got that pump out. Definately applying some anti-seize to the threads when I install the new ones. These are the tsunami 800 gph pumps I'm gonna install.

Some people have been saying they're a little higher quality than the piranhas

Any tips on getting them out? I am attempting to get the rear pump out... Hasnt moved in 12 years

I need to remove the original Rule 700 ballast fill pump from my 2002 Wakesetter 21LSV because the outlet nipple cracked off. That pump has not been removed in 15 years, and I can't seem to get it off. Liquid Wrench did not help, and the pump body is mostly just round and smooth, no place for a pipe wrench to get a grip. Any suggestions?

Try googling faucet wrench or basin nut wrench. These are pseudo pipe wrenches that may grip in that small space. They are designed for under sink work.

Got the same problem trying to replace my 800gph with 1100gph..  I've taken out the inner pump so now it's just hollow case that's stuck on the thru-hull.  My idea is to drill a hole through both sides of the case and then use screw driver or similar metal rode through the holes to get some leverage on it..  The pump is toast anyway since the water intake pipe snapped off when I was trying to remove the hose..
