Sunscape = Wakesetter?

Question: I bought what I thought was a Wakesetter (has Wakesetter emblem on side of hull) in April 2009. I was just looking at the paperwork and I noticed that the boat was titled and insured as a Sunscape 23 lsv. So did the dealer mislead me? I specifically wanted a wakeboarding boat (I.E. Wakesetter) and thought I was buying a Wakesetter. Now I come to find that I have the Diamond hull and that the boat is indeed a Sunscape model with a tower, power wedge, and 'Wakesetter' graphics.

Any advice anyone before I approach the dealership?

Dookoo,

What is the first letter hull number - MB2_ This specifies the model.

Did you buy it new off the lot?

Not so. If they ordered a Wakesetter on the diamond hull, you get everything (including tanks below the floor in the rear hatches) that a Wakesetter has on a diamond hull. I'm not sure how that would look on an order form, but going by that won't tell you what hull you have.

Look at the chines & compare it with the article that k_b_stephens linked to, they'll tell the story.

A dealer once told me they do this on most of their boats. I don't condone it, but their reasoning was for handling and rough water as well as the potential for crossover.

It has ballast (center and two side/rear). The hull number starts with mb2g. I'm pretty sure it's a diamond hull. Thanks for the input everyone.

23 LSV Sunscape with tower, power wedge, "Wakesetter" graphics, & plumbed-in hard tank ballast

is actually what is sometimes referred to as a "Fakesetter." If you made it clear to the dealer

that you wanted a wakeboarding boat, he was indeed misleading you if he did not disclose that

the boat was a "Sunscape" (= Diamond hull). While it is true that a 23 LSV Wakesetter can be

ordered with the Diamond hull, it's still a Wakesetter when it comes off the production line. It's

not a Sunscape!

A "G" model is a Sunscape 23 LSV, from year 2000 and up.

A "S" model is a Wakesetter 23 LSV, from year 2000 and up.

Honsestly the dealer probably didn't realize it was a fakesetter, and I'm not sure what path of recourse you have in this situation.

I would think the dealer would know exactly his inventory. Should be on all the paperwork he is using to make the final sale??

What does it say on the bill of sale?

What are the differences in a Sunscape and Wakesetter in 09? Never had a reason to compare the two, so just curious.

What about resale??

Some dealers have the ski boat lines but don't know jack about watersports, also we don't know if it was even bought from a Malibu dealer.

Not to Hijack, but what if it was a MB2K? Is there a hull reference page somewhere on TMC?

The differences between the two in 2009 are:

Wakesetter:

Wake hull standard (Diamond is optional)

Rear MLS standard

Center MLS standard

Front MLS optional

Illusion XS tower standard

Ballast Monitoring system standard

Wakesetter graphics standard

The emblems on the tower and the LED lit emblems inside say "Wakesetter"

Small access panel in the floor

Docking lights optional

Sunscape:

Diamond hull standard

Rear MLS optional

Center MLS optional (sac in ski locker instead of hard tank)

Front MLS not available

Illusion XS tower optional

Ballast Monitoring System not available

Wakesetter graphics optional

The emblems on the tower and the LED lit emblems inside say "Malibu"

Ski locker in the floor

Docking lights standard

Thanks everyone. I realize I have a 'Fakesetter'. It is a Sunscape on the bill of sale. Overall, I am very happy with the boat but think I will always wonder what it would be like to boarding behind a real Wakesetter that is titled in my name. This was to be my last boat purchase (almost 50 now) and it does irk me. It has center and rear ballasts but no monitoring system (I run fully filled anyways), it says "Malibu" on the emblem by the cupholders (not Wakesetter), I have the power wedge, Wakesetter hull graphics, and the Illusion tower. So forever shall I have Wake Envy. I think I'll put another fat sac in the front, have alot of beer, friends, good times and I'll call it good. Just put in 4 tower speakers, the most current black box software, and a JL 12"w6 sub so the tunes are there (old school of course!). I think I'll even dust off my old Redline Graphite Pro's and give 36 mph a whirl. Does anyone know if I can be a total "Fakesetter" and tell me if the Sunscape badge is easily removeable?

Still love my Bu!

Still a great boat. Its unfortunate that there are dealers that don't know ski boats. Some don't know the difference between a regal with a tower and an inboard wakeboard boat. Much less the difference between a sunscape and wakesetter.

It is so frustrating to know that a lot of us know a lot more than most of the people selling them. And that can really hurt the customer. But there are extremely knowledgeable dealers out there, i just wish there were more

The diamond hull has a nice wake, so don't sweat it. Guess it boils down to being realistic with your skills and whether a wake hull would really make a difference with your riding (wish I could blame my lack of skills on the hull Whistling.gif ) Regardless of the hull, you have BU! Any pics??

the cut diamond hull is not standard on the wakesetter series, it is however an option that is available on the wakesetter series. I believe that the cut diamond hull is the standard hull for the response series; a popular hull for the multi-event application. I would go back to that dealer, they took you!!!

True.

I really was driving a point that it said "Sunscape" on the bill of sale and the entire manufacturer's paperwork, so the question from the OP was already answered before titling and insurance or asking about model numbers, etc. Its a Sunscape.

At the POS was the time to ask the dealer for clarity and if they didn't know the answers, get on BU's web site.

But you got a great boat!! Enjoy it and most average people can do all the wakeboarding tricks you want to learn behind a Sunscape.

Absolutely agree.

You can also probably get a decent slalom wake behind your boat, which is something you can't do with the wake hull.
