Steering vibration

Recommended Posts

When I give the boat power from standstill I get about 3-4 seconds of vibration in the steering column. If I add extra throttle while underway, no vibration? Anyone else had this issue?

Mine does it sometimes but not all the time. It is just the prop wash going past rudder. I think that until you get moving and water flowing past rudder, turbulence of the wash just jiggles the rudder around. It's normal. I have my rudder trim tab adjusted for no side pull on wheel and that may contribute to it some too but I don't know about that.

My rudder seems to have a slight amount of play in it just wondering if that should be tightened up to prevent this?

If the trim tab is adjusted so there is no pull (i.e. neutral), it may feel like it has play in it. I always prefer a little pull to help with keeping the steering straight ... but then I'm a slalom guy.

If you mean by grasping the rudder in hand and turning back and forth and feeling play, I'd check the nuts on the steering cable to tiller arm stud. one nut holds the stud in the tiller and the other the steering rod end on the stud. Should be nuts with nyloc insert. Remember one member had his fall off.

Mine has play as if a nut on top of the rudder-in engine compartment were loose. Slight play back and forth and side to side. Haven't had a chance to see how it is attached inside since boat is loaded up.
