impeller

Recommended Posts

I've read some of the posts on replacing the impeller, so I thought I would give it a try. I was able to find the housing in our 2004 VLX but that was about as far as I got. Its located under an exhaust component and the rear plate of the housing that has the four screws is only a couple of inches from the fiberglass of the transom.

Question...how do you guys do this maintenance?? Do you remove some of the components?

Thanks, Bill

it is pretty easy. you need a short screw driver. remove each screw and don't drop them. pop the cover off the impellar. pull out the old impellar and get all of the pieces. removing old impellar can be tricky. i use 2 screwdrivers to do it - one on each side of the impellar and gently pry/pop it out. install the new impellar and replace the gasket and cover/screws. no components need to be removed to do this job.

If it is a vDrive I would recommend the impeller puller, they cost 60 odd bucks and that is cheaper than a dealer. It can be tricky without it. It is much easier on a direct drive without one.

i used a socket to get the screws out but a and also replaced them once they were out, also to get the impeller out, needle nose vice grips did the trick but it took me a good minute to do it

Short screwdriver & a paint can opener on a piece of string. Remove the screws & faceplate. Hang the paint can opener over the exhaust, holding the string in one hand. Then insert the end of the paint can opener in the impeller & hold it cocked at an angle while you pull the string. This causes the paint can opener to hook the back edge of the impeller & pull it loose. Then you can pull it out by hand.
