V-Drive Over Full

Recommended Posts

I bought an 2007 23 LVS a few weeks back and noticed that the V-Drive is about an inch to an inch and a quarter over full when checked on the trailer. No, I keep forgetting to check it on the water. It is also MUCH darker than the trans fluid.

Is this normal?

Will this cause any issue in the future?

The local dealer has done all the services so I have some recourse if it's a problem. I want to change the fluids before we head out for the weekend, but if it's an issue I want to take it by and show them before I touch it.

There is a reason there is a full level on those things, an inch over is WAY over of that v-drive, and shouldn't change when on the water.

The color also makes me nervous, does it look like burnt fluid?

I would suggest a fluid change to the proper level asap.

No burnt smell..... I've worked in the car biz for years and know what burnt trans fluid smells like. I plan on changing it tonight, the question is should I worrier about something down the road?

Yeah, there has been confusion about that. People that have had older boats don't realize that the new Skivee takes Dexron in both the tranny and vdrive, even though it's clearly labeled on the unit.

I don't think gear oil is the issue.....

The guy I bought it from was on his third BU and we have all the services done by my dealer.

Does of your V-Drive fluid ever get dirty?

Again the trans looks perfect.....

BTW anyone here ever clean the "air filter"? Do I just undo the clamp and pull it off?

I've never seen dirty fluid out of the tranny & vdrive. It usually looked so good that I had to wonder why I was even changing it. But like I said, fill her back up to proper levels & keep an eye on it.

The air filter can be cleaned, not sure how necessary it is in that environment though. You'll need a K&N filter cleaning kit (it comes with instructions), available at almost any Schucks or Autozone.

I just cleaned my K&N filter for the heck of it. I believe I read in the manual they recommend every 400 or 500 hrs. I'm well below that, but picked up a cleaning kit at Pep Boys for $10. Dusty lakes are not very common. I would guess that heavy pollen might eventually make the filter a little dirty, but even that is a stretch.

If not familiar with the process, the kit comes with a can of cleaner, and a can of oil. It is quite simple...remove clamp & filter, apply cleaner, then rinse from inside out, let dry thoroughly, then re-apply oil (which give the filter the "reddish" color). Most will warn you NOT to use too much oil. The kit comes w/ instructions and enough ingredients to do several cleanings.

Thanks..... I'll just change it out tonight and call it good.....

i would try to find out if it is really 30W oil, or just dirty transmission fluid.

the two might not mix well together and you might need to find a way to flush out the oil before installing Dextron.

Put the trans fluid in one clear jug and the V-Drive in another. Bother were tranny fluid the v-drive was just overfull and DIRTY. I plan on runing it this weekend and changing it again and again and again until its clean........

I was only able to add about 1.33 quarts back in the trans and by the fluid chart it hold about 2. I did not run it yet and plan to check and top off all fluids on the water tomorrow.

We also tackeled an oil change and switched out the impeller..... Rockon.gif

Boat should be ready to go Clap.gif
