92 skier transmission oil

Recommended Posts

I have a 1992 Malibu Skier with the direct drive Borg Warner 1:1 transmission and was wondering what oil I should use when I change it. The book calls for "10wt. tractor hydraulic fluid meeting the C3/To-2 specification (preferably Mobil 423, Chevron, or Citgo)" However, I went to the local Malibu dealer and they said they just use regular ATF in everything. That sounded kind of stupid to me since the book calls for hydraulic oil which is quite different than ATF. What do you guys use in your similar transmissions? I am thinking about using this Amsoil tractor hydraulic fluid: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/ath.aspx

Do you think this is the right stuff it looks like it meets the Borg-Warner spec for the oil "C-3(Allison) and TO-2(Catepillar spec)?"

Thanks!

Anyone else have a suggestion from their previous experience with the older malibu Borg Warner transmissions?

Sounds like it meets specs. I would use it if the color of the fluid in your trans is comparable.

If the fluid in the trans is red, go with trans fluid.

I have trans fluid in mine.

I have an 88 Skier that has been running Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in the tranny for about 15 years. The tranny is a Borg Warner Velvet Drive 1:1. It works great. You'll be fine - you Malibu dealer was right on.

Martinarcher. Did you flush the old trans (hydraulic oil) out multiple times before you just starting running with ATF?

Picked up a 88 skier and the lady I bought it from had no info since her husband passed. The oil was drained from the motor. I started it up runs great but won’t shift into gear , I have not checked my trans oil. [ will tonight ] question is, will this cause the prop to not move or go into gear if he drained the trans oil also ?
