Raw water pump reinstall - anything specific reqd

Recommended Posts

Is there anything specific alignment wise or process wise for re-installing an engine mounted raw water pump?

I just reinstalled my raw water pump (had to remove to replace the impeller...long story) on a 2002 Sunscape 21 LSV with an Indmar monsoon. It is the johnson pump mounted to the front of the harmonic balancer (or whatever that main pulley on the front of the engine is called). As discussed in other threads, you really can't see what you are doing on the water pump on the 21 LSV. I was just bolted it back on by feel, but did not have time to test run. Later started to wonder since the mounting holes on the pump seemed larger than the bolts. There were several different holes on the mounting plate on the pump. Used the small ones. Probably being overly paranoid, but the boat and this pump style are new to me. My previous direct-drive you could see exactly what you had done, and could tell if it was right.

Any one done the the pump install in this configuration?

Answering my own question..... Phone Tech support at skidim.com explained that there is a ridge on the mounting flange of the pump (around/near a bolt hole) that settles in a ring on the harmonic balancer and forces centering. Wish I could have seen that. Kudos to skidim for answering a question (from a repeat customer) when I did not order one of the parts in question from them. They recommend that I bump it for a couple rotations with the lanyard pulled to see if there is vibration/wobble. No wobble = Got lucky. Wobble = remove/feel around for the ridge & slot/re-install.

Fingers crossed.
