Low oil pressure/boat won't start

Recommended Posts

I have a a 2002 23xti that I am selling and last summer when the boat would sit in the sun not running it would not start. It would beep and then oil pressure would flash and the engine would kill or not start at all. There was always plenty of oil and if I would get towed and Air would move through the boat I could start it up and as long at the boat was out of the sun and cool or moving there were not problems. Once running the oil pressure was good and the gauges read perfectly.

I am thinking of replacing the Oil pressure sending unit as others have done, but I have not heard of anyones boat not starting. Could it be wiring too?

Sounds like this could be a connection problem that is effected by the heat and expansion, these are very hard to find. I had a similar incident in our truck with the cluster gauges and you pretty much have to go through and make sure that all, I MEAN all your connections are tight and secure and free of moisture, including your ground wires. Good Luck, I don't like electrical issues Whistling.gif

On a long shot, check the safety switch. In a previous topic, one of the owners reported minimal/inconsistent contact in the switch, where he put a dime in place to ensure proper contact. Maybe the heat makes the plastic fork expand just enough to loose switch contact?????

Thanks

I will check out both suggestions. The boat will be coming out of storage in about 1 month. (Freeking MN winters) I want to try and get it right before I get a phone call after seeling.

Get an exorcist, that boat is possessed....Or, leave it in the sun with a towel over the dash to see of the problem is there and not under the hatch.

I did the towel trick last summer and it worked! When the boat faced into the sun no real problems. When the sun could hit the steering wheel and gauges It could still be and issue.

Does that change my plan of attack? Is it an electrical short in the Dash?

I would think so. Look carefully under the dash especially by the ignition switch to see if there is something amiss.

Are there 2 plugs? one on each end? Or is it a bunch of individual wires by the engine and a big plug under the dash?

It is a fairly large round (Cannon shaped) plug that is mounted on the motor with a bracket. It contains all the wires that go to the helm (dashboard area) from the motor. The wires from the helm are enclosed in a plastic conduit as they run on the floor of the bilge towards the motor, then go up to the plug. Not sure where the plug is on a V-drive.
